To have two toilet brushes?

WhatTiggersDoBest · 17/04/2020 09:19

Our house came with a loo brush but I didn't want to use it so I bought another one. DH suggested we keep the first one for just in case we ever get stomach flu or similar.
But I keep seeing on MN that people don't use toilet brushes. How else do you clean your loo? Do we just have bad quality poo or something for why our loo needs scrubbing? Do Mumsnetters have special toilet fish that eat the yuck away?
AIBU to have two toilet brushes?
If so, what's the "proper" MN-approved way of cleaning a loo the day after my DH has had a curry?
Am fully prepared to hear I'm being unreasonable. Grin

Okay folks you have inspired me to get my arse in gear, don some gloves and remove the offending bogbrush as soon as DH gets up and can supervise the baby.
.......Yeah I really do have a DH problem. He's still in training.

I feel like my eyes have been opened to a whole different world with people using toilet roll to wipe their toilet bowls clean. I had no idea people did that.

Big fan of toilet brushes, no idea why they cause such hysteria. Avoids chemicals, stores in own holder, doesn't go near anything else, heads replaced regularly. Arms-length thorough cleaning, I buy brown brush heads so they don't look as grim... Have never understood why people hate them so much nor how they properly clean a loo without shedloads of squirt/block chemicals which Id rather avoid. This one really splits MN Smile

A few comments:

  • a second had loo brush? Just no, no.
  • I use toilet roll and/or bleach to remove poo marks
  • I have used a loo brush at work and it always has poo crumbs on it from the previous users
  • they don’t come off under a clean flush..
  • I have always thought of them as germ ridden things
  • we never had a loo brush growing up
  • those regularly getting turds stuck in the u-bend beed to eat more fruit and veg.
  • those with loo brushes sitting around in bleach at floor level, don’t you worry about safety with children and pets?

Does anyone else have a problem with staining on wall mounted toilets? Becuase of the angle I find the poo lands on the shelf inside the toilet rather than in the water and then makes a mess. I am really regretting getting this type of toilet.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 17/04/2020 12:28

@crazydiamond Yes this is my exact toilet cleaning dilemma! Every bloody day there's a new mess to clean up. I'm losing the will to clean it up.

Wow can't believe anyone cleans their loo several times a day or even several times a week. We have a loo brush, you just give it a good wash after with a fresh flush and it's fine. we only use it with loo cleaner. We never use bleach, horrible stuff.

If anyone ever came to our house though we have sparkling porcelain!

JigsawsAreInPieces · 17/04/2020 12:31

We have 4 loo brushes, one for each loo. We also have a bloo block in each cistern and I squirt toilet cleaner into each loo every night.

Baaaahhhhh · 17/04/2020 12:43

A few more vegetables needed methinks

They are generated by vegetarian DD - I rather think it is a case of TOO MUCH fibre Grin. Oh, and probably shit plumbing.

LakieLady · 17/04/2020 12:49

I do use a brush in the loo but it’s different design to what you have in the U.K

AIBU to want to see a pic of this forrin lavatory brush? Grin

LakieLady · 17/04/2020 13:02

@ASandwichNamedKevin, we found Harpic Power Plus 10X was better at getting rid of limescale than the Harpic that claims to be for removing limescale.

Sometimes only spirit of salts will do, but it's scarey stuff to use.

I swear if we left the house empty for long enough, the lime scale in our water would form a stalagmite in the bog. It's a shocker for disclouring grouting too.

I want to see this too. I've lived in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, America, Greece, Japan and Ireland, and all around the world I've only seen toilet brushes with bristles on one end and a handle on the other end. I'm intrigued.

PS the dusty disgusting one that came with the house a few months ago is now in the bin and if the lettings agency get on at me about it I'll direct them to this thread. Grin

I never understand this argument against loo brushes.

Some people are dirty bastards. That’s not the loo brush’s fault Grin

I’ve seen plenty of shit stained toilets in my time. That doesn’t mean I’m going to swear off toilets altogether.

ASandwichNamedKevin · 17/04/2020 13:13

Thank you for the tip @LakieLady I have the Harpic limescale which is not working but will try the other one.

Don't get me started on our peach-coloured grout. Or the effort of cleaning the shower doors and then one shower and the hard water drying on them like they hadn't been cleaned in a month!

EngagedAgain · 17/04/2020 14:54

@Crazydiamond222, erm sit further back 😬😬 OR put a bit of loo roll on said shelf then it lands on that, voila! Best if shelf is wet or loo roll might not stay in place. Depends on how much of a slope it's at.

crazydiamond222 · 17/04/2020 15:18

@engagedagain Thanks for the tips Wink. Will try the toilet paper thing but as for sitting further back either my legs are too short or the toilet is just a wierd shape.

@WhatTiggersDoBest At least I now know I am not the only one with this issue Blush

ZiggeryZaggy · 17/04/2020 15:26

I had cleaner used to sit the brush in the toilet, with bleach in, then go back after cleaning the bathroom and doing other things, flush and then put the brush back. I have borrowed this idea so it is always clean - and we change brushes very regularly.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 17/04/2020 16:21

I'm honestly a bit shocked with the current issues buying loo roll that anyone is suggesting using it for a bomb pad! Grin

I have two of the Lakeland silicone ones - they are brilliant , non stick, squish about under the flowing water to clean.
I have diverticular disease , if I used bleach each time I'd have no eyes left Shock

DysonFury · 17/04/2020 16:41

YABBU as long as you also have two poo knives.

LaurieMarlow · 17/04/2020 16:46

two poo knives.

🤣🤣🤣

BogRollBOGOF · 17/04/2020 16:58

I have never seen an appropriate answer on how to live without a loo brush.

Having hard water originating from peaty bogs before getting to the resevoir means that we rapidly get a browny-orange limescale that needs scrubbing.

We have IBS and histories of food allergies and intolerances in the family. Modern pathetic flushes and the shape of the toilet bowls simply don't flush away much of the DC's stools on the bowl, and they streak under the waterline. I have no desire to smear their globs and streaks around with toilet paper and it would just disintegrate under the waterline Envy

I'll stick with owning a toilet brush per toilet (not second hand Grin ) per toilet and use of Harpic Power as necessary (and an extra flush to rinse the toilet brush)

WhatTiggersDoBest · 17/04/2020 17:31

@DysonFury ya I have a full 16 piece toilet cutlery set:
4 poo knives
4 pee forks
4 constipation spoons
And 4 pairs of vomit chopsticks
Napkins optional, depends how formal we feel like being. Grin
