Just seen this on facebook then Ben Fogle wants us to stand on our doorsteps and sing happy birthday to the queen Hmm

It's a mad world at the moment, in more ways than one!

Ah, I can't get worked up about it. I think it just helps some people feel like they're doing something in this crazy time. I'm surprised that the clap for carers is still going to be honest, I thought it would've died out already but I genuinely think it helps people feel good. Can't begrudge people a teeny bit of joy at a time like this.

HugeAckmansWife · 17/04/2020 07:12

Yep, bloody ridiculous and like everything that is overdone, will rapidly lose its meaning. Never understand why 'public shows' of support, grief, empathy etc are so important. I can show my support, appreciation or whatever in a way that actually makes a difference but noone need know. Thank fuck my area doesn't seem to be going in for any of the clapping and certain not the fb shaming I've read about in here.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 17/04/2020 07:35

It's now virtue signalling bollocks amd people are going out of their way to call out people who don't do it. It's Stalinist crap that is way more about the clapper than the clapee.
It gives people the sense of control.
It's like compulsory poppy wearing, it totally loses it's meaning.

Geronimorlassie · 17/04/2020 07:37

I am in Australia. So far there has been none of this clapping business. Reading what is happening in Britain...I am sincerely hoping for no clapping to continue here.....

Kalim8 · 17/04/2020 07:41

Meh, it's a daily event in some countries!

iVampire · 17/04/2020 07:46

As they say, our NHS is the new national religion, and Thursday evening is the time for worship

You can still deeply appreciate key workers, especially front line ones, without going to join The Clap. Others really value the collective act of coming together.

I’m not sure that adding on further collective acts right now is the right thing to do. But I expect there will be a tide of birthday greetings for Captain Tom (and as it’s his 💯 then telegram from the Queen might well feature). I think spontaneous is better for this one

Jellycatfox · 17/04/2020 07:47

Please no. Please no more with the clapping. People are beyond ridiculous now.

Loooobyloo · 17/04/2020 07:50

And the 'clap for our brave liccle children' #heroes

I’ll clap for Ben Foogle to piss off

HugeAckmansWife · 17/04/2020 07:53

Not only is it in many cases insincere, its the 1984 style '"policing' of it in some communities that is genuinely worrying and has been commented on before, is educational in that it shows just how ready people are to snitch on others to promote their own righteous compliance.

Loooobyloo · 17/04/2020 07:54

@Someone I applaud that comment! Grin

I’m bored of all the clapping calls, but for Tom Moore I’d make an exception. That guy is a British hero.

Stellamboscha · 17/04/2020 07:57

Yes!😀

Umnoway · 17/04/2020 08:45

Agreed. People in my area went mental last night, some were sitting in their car hooting their horn and others had klaxons... It’s all a bit much.

RedHelenB · 17/04/2020 08:53

Lighten up a bit. YABU. I dont particularly want to sing shpoy birthday to the queen but if others do let them get on with it.

AuntieMarys · 17/04/2020 08:57

Who don't we clap for? Estate agents? Baliffs? Traffic wardens?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 17/04/2020 09:21

Spare a thought for the STI patients and clap for the clap.

user1498647726 · 17/04/2020 09:27

I'm trying not to over think it, as think most people, as pp's have said, just want to do something. But agree after the first one, is no liable to be a bit virtue signally.
Also, feels like the opposite end of the Two Minutes Hate:more well meaning, obviously, but too close to not feel simular.
