I'm so embarrassed I didn't think of saying anything at the time

I went to a new GP surgery yesterday (new because our surgery merges with another one and the one I usually go to in the village is purely for covid-19 patients/ people who think they've got it to get swabs and have phone appointments) so I went to one in a different village.

I was there for a breast exam, and the dr immediately told me to get my top off and didn't pull the curtain round the table so I could get my kit off in private, she kept asking me questions about my history whilst I was getting undressed.

However the issue I have and had at the time is that directly opposite the room was a building with windows on the same level as the window I was now standing naked from the waist up in front of. There were blinds in the room but I didn't think to ask her to close them. I did ask if anyone could see in and she said no. I just got a bit overwhelmed with why I was there and what she was telling me about the clinic she was referring me to

However when I left I realised the building was the other side of bloody Waitrose! And the queue to get in the shop might have been able to see my baps!

I feel so bloody stupid now I didn't stand up for myself and ask her to close the curtains, either round the bed or of the room! I'd never do that to my patients.

I don't know what would come From complaining mind you unless a reminder to be mindful of patient dignity?

Yeah I think you should, she made you feel uncomfortable and needs to be reminded how to treat patients it's awful when you feel you're being silly or awkward, try to forget about it and don't feel stupid at all

I wouldn't complain as such, however, I would send an email or maybe even ring them and just point out that you realised how exposed you may have been when you left the building. You'll get the same result.

Could you see into the room you had been in from outside? I was wondering if it may have that film on it that is clear from the inside but not from the outside and the doctor knew but didn't think to elaborate.

On the bright side (trying to find one in this climate), it's mortifying just now, but in a few years, you'll be able to re-tell your story on a "Something embarrassing just happened to me, make me feel better by sharing your stories!" thread.

Yes I could see in the room 😂 I'm not sure I'll bother. The nhs is stretched as it is. Maybe I gave Waitrose a nice view GrinBlush

Definitely complain.

caramelbun · 17/04/2020 12:18

Quite surprised at the doctor for this, this is not right. I think you need to contact the GPs about this so they don't do it again. Protecting patient dignity is a very very basic thing.

Windyatthebeach · 17/04/2020 12:21

When I went for my check up I changed in private but the examiner commented it must be cold outside....
I received a call back but didn't go. Wish I had complained now.
So do complain op...

Email the practice manager to let them know.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 17/04/2020 12:41

I can understand how you feel but having recently had 3 biopsies in quick succession on my left breast, believe me there comes a stage where you strip your top off as soon as you enter the breast clinic examination room. You tend to lose your inhibitions in those circumstances.

If you would prefer the blind closed, ask for them to be closed.

Ifonlywecouldwishuponastar · 17/04/2020 12:45

yes she should have closed the blinds or the curtain. And asked you the questions whilst examining you.

rowlett · 17/04/2020 12:53

@Windyatthebeach I'm a bit gobsmacked by that! Awful.
