To go to A&E for eye pain?

I'm wanting to avoid A&E at all costs at the moment for obvious reasons. I would normally go to the optician for this but they are shut. Sounds stupid but toddler DC rammed a plastic toy into my eye this morning and dragged it across my eyeball. It was really really sore at the time, and has got more irritated/sensitive/watery all day and is now driving me crazy. Or can GPs deal with this? Or is it the kind of thing that just gets better on it's own? Can anyone help??

🥂👍🌈 Good result!

Opticians are open for emergencies
They act as a triage for emergency hospital eye clinics. You might need to phone around a few though.
Phone first thing, dont leave it whatever you do.

Disclaimer: I work in a hospital eye clinic

Sorry have just rtft. I'm glad you are ok and seen quick!

Overjoyedd · 17/04/2020 04:59

Welcome back, I am glad it went smoothly Flowers

Quite different to what DH had experienced (I know it's a different hospital tho) he said nurses were NOT wearing masks but they were very friendly and complimented on his mask - which I made.

Great update Bouncingbelle and hope you recover soon Flowers

Great to hear you've been to A&E.

If you leave eye injuries they can ulcerate. Somehow I got an eye ulcer - don't remember scratching the eye, but do wear contacts which could have been the culprit. It was awful. So painful.

An eye injury can turn so quickly and have permanent damage, it's best to deal with them as soon as possible.

Rubyupbeat · 17/04/2020 07:23

Glad you got it sorted, it's so painful, but heals really quickly.

Good to hear back from you @Bouncingbelle.

one local hospital has an eye casualty. It amuses me that you follow the signs of a picture of a big eye on a yellow background... just in case patients have trouble seeing!

Insideout99 · 17/04/2020 21:37

Hope you feel better soon OP, you did the right thing

Likethebattle · 17/04/2020 21:56

I had to go to eye A&E once. Bloody 6 hour wait as they treat emergencies as well as walk ins. Never mess about with eyes. I actually got called by my optician yesterday and they did my lens check over the phone? She said when they kid. They will be wearing masks as they do get in quite close when doing the eye health check.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 17/04/2020 22:12

I'm glad you got it sorted.

I was about to post to say it will be an abrasion and need drops.

We have had a few here (over the years) and they need seeing to (pun absolutely intended)x

They hurt like a bitch though. So you're either very brave or you played the pain down on this thread.
Mind you, mine was caused by a cigarette (not mine!).

PurpleDaisies · 17/04/2020 22:19

Corneal abrasions are horrible. Glad you’re sorted.

Tho gutted that we are now back to self isolation again after just completing 2 weeks of it!

Who has told you to do this?

vanillandhoney · 17/04/2020 22:37

I'm glad your eye is better but you have no need to self isolate again surely?

Bouncingbelle · 19/04/2020 00:27

Thanks all. Im meant to be staying in for the full 12 weeks on drs orders. It's much better already, was in agony with it the other night!

Glad you did go to A&E - you really can’t be too careful with eyes. Hopefully you have some chloramphenicol drops or similar to start with (antibiotic), the pain killers will be needed as your cornea has more nerve endings than any other part of your body per square mm and is extremely sensitive. Keep an eye on it and do not wash your face with water at all. Do not get it wet whilst you have the abrasion as you could get a worse infection. If it gets suddenly worse, especially in 5-7 days then you must go back to the hospital and ask for an emergency ophthalmology appointment and ask them to look at fungal keratitis or acanthamoeba keratitis due to the timing and abrasion. The most important though is do not get it wet. I can’t stress this enough. Take care.
