To ask how often you get sickness bugs

We’ve had a stomach bug twice within the last year. I’ve just googled this and apparently the average person only gets one five times in a lifetime. Aibu to have thought it was common to catch it more often than that as it’s so contagious?

About 4 times so far. Once so bad I had to be on a drip at a&e it was awful!

Bloodybridget · 17/04/2020 22:25

Never, unless when I was a child and have forgotten. I'm in my mid 60s.

Asthenia · 17/04/2020 22:26

I’ve had about 4 bugs in my life (29 years old). I’ve vomited about 8/9 times in my entire life...I didn’t throw up for a decade between the ages of 10-20, not even when drunk! Some people are so casual about vomit, I kind of envy them.

Ilovewheelychairs · 17/04/2020 22:44

@hoggleludo (excellent name by the way, one of the best films ever!) I have never heard of it, but you're right, it fits all my symptoms exactly!! Thank you! I hope your daughter is better with the steroid treatment/having her tonsils out?

BelfryBat · 17/04/2020 22:47

I’ve had at least 8. I’m middle aged. A GP told me once that if you move around a lot you get them more because there are different regional strains.

Fallenmadonnawiththebigboobies · 17/04/2020 22:48

3 times in my life and I think one was food poisoning. I'm 47.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 17/04/2020 22:51

Maybe once in my lifetime.

Silversun83 · 17/04/2020 22:54

As an adult:

2 x food poisoning when travelling SE Asia
2 x food poisoning at restaurants

Since having children four years ago:

4 x norovirus!! Every winter season.

Agree that some people are more prone to particular illnesses. My weakness is definitely sickness bugs which is a shame as I have a huge fear of them! (Am also blood type O, interestingly - have not heard that before). Conversely, have never had flu or a chest infection..

My DD (nearly 4) seems to be following in my footsteps unfortunately - she is generally a pukey person as in addition to being prone to sickness bugs, is also sick at night when she has a bad cough.

My 2-year-old DS however has only ever been sick once 🤷‍♀️

OneOfTheGrundys · 17/04/2020 22:57

Twice in the last 5 years. Awful.

AndOr · 17/04/2020 23:32

Pretty sure I used to have it once a year when I was a small child.

Then none from being teenager to having my own children. Then about 5 in the last 13 years.

DH has never had a vomiting bug in the whole time I've known him, and DD has only had 1 in 13 years.

Me and DS definitely seem more prone.

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 17/04/2020 23:33

Maybe half a dozen times, although at least twice was food poisoning, and once was when DS first started nursery and there was an outbreak. DH gets an upset stomach when he's stressed, I lean more towards tension headaches.

Scbchl · 17/04/2020 23:36

Cannot tell you the last time we had sickness bugs and we have never had one where its spread round all five of us. Every few years maybe someone will have one. Coughs, colds and chest infections we are more prone to.

MamaGothel · 17/04/2020 23:47

I last had one in September 2016. I remember because my DD was just a couple of weeks old. DP got it, and then I started a few hours later but the baby thankfully was fine. It was hell looking after her though.

I had a few when I was a child but I think just the one as an adult. My children haven't had one yet despite being at nursery and school.

MamaGothel · 17/04/2020 23:51

I'm also an O blood type so maybe I'm just lucky!

Insideout99 · 18/04/2020 00:21

I’m 28 and haven’t had one since primary school

Hoggleludo · 18/04/2020 10:40

@Ilovewheelychairs

Yes. She was effectively cured. She had her tonsils out. She was very young. She was 2.5 I think. Worst time of my life. She had 18 months of sickness. She got a periodic fever every 10 days. It was really bad. She stopped eating. She stopped laughing......

We saw so many doctors. Eventually I took her private and said please listen to me. He did. He agreed to take her tonsils out. I was right. She started growing again. Eating again. Sleeping again. Her teeth disintegrated. Due to her vomiting so much. Fortunately they were her baby teeth.

Most importantly. She started laughing again.
