Food waste and maggots

Aibu to consider giving up on food waste because of maggots
Or can anyone advice how to not get them ?
Bin is normally collected weekly but last week they forgot to take it so told me to keep and put out this week
Bin was quite full with veg peelings and fruit and veg off cuts etc
Gone to put out tonight and bin is covered in little maggots crawling out bin despite lid being shut
Have poured boiling water over for now and will bleach out when empty etc
But this is putting me off as I haven't done food waste for a while as didn't have food bin sent but last time I did occasionally got maggots but never get them in wheelie bins even though we used to have to put food in them think they just seem more airtight
Any suggestions all waste was bagged in degradable bags

Do you have a garden? If you do you could compost everything except spud peelings, meat and processed food (bread, pastry etc)

Lots of councils sell compost bins very inexpensively.

Vinegar over them kills them. Also sprinkle on fly eggs to kill them and some regularly in your food waste bin to deter flies

Have a garden but very small and no room for compost bin as already have wheelie bin , food bin and 2 soon to be 3 boxes for recycling and newish build so garden is quite small. Haven't tried vinegar but do have some white vinegar so maybe will give that a try as well . Hoping it's also because was 2 weeks and when we brought it back in bin men had lifted up handle allowing gap so maybe they got in then as been doing for few weeks and first time had the problem but then weather has got warmer

I have started double bagging food waste (we use biodegradable green bags) especially when it is really hot. Ours is always collected every 2 weeks

Easilyanxious · 16/04/2020 23:04

Council suggest keeping in shade as well but not always easy in small garden planning on building a storage for recycling so hoping that may help
Small garden and these bins isn't easy though

Will try double bagging as well though food waste bags aren't exactly cheap but better than the maggots

Were there any scraps of meat or fish which would attract bluebottles? They can apparently smell meat from a mile away.
I keep any such scraps and e.g the remains of a chicken carcass after it’s been boiled up for stock, in a food waste bag in the freezer until the night before the bin men come.

Chouxalacreme · 16/04/2020 23:16

Have you checked to see if your council are taking food waste at the moment ? Many have stopped and said to put food waste that you aren’t able to compost into the normal bin for the time being

dementedpixie · 16/04/2020 23:17

We have 4 big wheelie bins so they take up loads of space

dementedpixie · 16/04/2020 23:18

Ours is still taking food waste every 2 weeks as general waste is only every 3 weeks. Dread to think what food waste would smell like at the end of that!

Easilyanxious · 16/04/2020 23:34

Still taking food waste here just garden ware they have stopped
Bin men seemed to just miss food last week , think because there is less doing it so was just an oversight
No meat as far as I know all though dh could of put a few scraps in , maggots are really tiny was wondering if fruit flys ? Feel bad putting out with maggots in have tried to kill them but don't know what else I can do other than top it into the main bin which is also going tomorrow

Re taking is great but when they built these houses wish they had thought about bins as we have to put them on pavement out front as well as no font garden and our bin men tend to come at 7 am so often put out night before ( unless windy ) so that we don't miss - the whole street does

Recycling not retaking

Maggots just make my skin crawl and I'm so put off
I wash all my recycling and normally have my bins washed every month ( although they aren't coming at the moment ) so I have been using a wheelie bin bag liner as well not that stuff goes in loose but we do have a dog so make sure nothing leeks etc , but don't have a maggot problem in main bin as the lid seems more airtight
