to think festivals should just cancel?

Supposed to be going to a festival in August. 15000 attendees is their usual. They're posting online as if they're going to continue. AIBU to think they're mad in thinking it could go ahead and should make the decision to cancel? Or is there a real possibility it could still happen? If the latter, I'm not sure I would even still want to go...

Is it Bloodstock? I'm supposed to be working there. Not heard anything either way.

clareOclareO · 16/04/2020 10:19

It's highly unlikely that it will be able to go ahead. The reason they are not cancelling is probably
a) they want to put off refunds for as long as possible
b) any insurance they have against cancellation will most likely only be valid if the government forces them to cancel it. At the moment the government are renewing the lockdown every three weeks so currently the event can still go ahead.

caradelvigna · 16/04/2020 10:21

Fair enough Clare I hadn't thought of the insurance thing. It's not bloodstock but similar. I just can't see it going ahead. Not going to lie I am gutted but see how it is necessary

It's going to be a very quiet summer for festival people.

cologne4711 · 16/04/2020 12:35

I see that festivals are banned in Germany until the end of August. I'd be surprised if it were different here.

CCaK · 16/04/2020 12:37

Is it MK Reggae? We have tickets for it and they are still posting on FB saying they hope to go ahead.

BBC News - Coronavirus: Significant social distancing needed 'until vaccine found'
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52308201

In reality until a vaccine is found many social activities aren't going to be allow:

Restaurant
Bars
Clubs
Cinema
Concerts
Shows
Conferences

The list is very long.

DD really wanted to go to Reading (post-GCSE rite of passage with her mates). It’s not been called off (yet) but we’re not going to buy a ticket until much nearer the time

I’m in the shield group, which does complicate things a bit when it comes to what is sensible for the DC to do

halcyondays · 16/04/2020 12:44

Highly unlikely that any large gatherings like festivals will be allowed this summer.

CheshireDing · 16/04/2020 12:49

We have tickets for Green Man in August.

At the moment they are still taking my monthly payments for it but I am sceptical it will go ahead, would be gutted too as it’s the children’s first music festival and I really wanted to see Michael K.

Lycidas · 16/04/2020 12:51

I’m not sure why you’re placing restaurants in the same category as concerts, @YeahWhatevver . Restaurants are reopening in some European countries as early as May. Lots of sweaty festival goers mingling amongst each other is a different proposition.

rookiemere · 16/04/2020 12:55

They've not cancelled Duran Duran on 7th June in Dublin, although all the other dates are cancelled. Really hoping they do as there's little chance we'll be able to get there so might as well have some of the cost back.

daisychicken · 16/04/2020 13:04

DS and friends have tickets for Reading. I've been really surprised that it hasn't been cancelled already. I honestly can't see it going ahead but have been a bit taken back that they are still advertising as if there are no possible issues.

Fluffybutter · 16/04/2020 13:05

@YeahWhatevver sorry but you’re talking rot.
They said if anything ,restaurants will be one of the first things along with non essential shops .

m00rfarm · 16/04/2020 13:13

My son has tickets for the Rolling Loud Festival in the Algarve in July - they still seem to be going ahead, but as a large percentage of people attending are coming from outside Portugal, not sure how this will work. He is gutted as he really wanted to go. The other issue is that I purchased him two tickets in my name (and am a Portuguese resident) so if they only give refunds to non Portuguese residents as they are not allowed to travel across the border, I am stuck with the two tickets (and it is not really my scene!)

JagerPlease · 16/04/2020 15:31

I have tickets for Guns N Roses in May in London and it hasn't been cancelled yet!

DurhamDurham · 16/04/2020 15:37

The Isle of Wight festival was cancelled a few weeks back but we've been told at least 60 days to get refund. We also booked pod style accommodation via a separate company and they're doing everything they can to not refund us, I understand they're a niche business and rely on festival income but it cost us £780 for a pod for a long weekend, we can't let that go, we're currently going down the legal route to get the money back.
