To think retail staff should have PPE

fourpeasinapod · 15/04/2020 15:48

Was at my local Tesco today and it just made me wonder why on Earth they and other retail workers aren’t being provided with PPE.

If NHS staff can be given it then surely shop workers are entitled to it as well.

OP you are not listening and becoming increasingly irrational. Total lockdown is not possible, nor would it have the effect you want.

fourpeasinapod · 15/04/2020 18:33

Is it any wonder ? I am bloody petrified. We need to do something

Greggers2017 · 15/04/2020 18:33

I work for the NHS un substance misuse. We're still testing and seeing clients face to face. We have gloves and alcohol wash and face masks that's it.
DP works from probation and he's seeing prison releases and nothing at all is provided for him!

JoExotic · 15/04/2020 18:36

You sound hysterical. You need to take some deep breaths and step away from this post OP.

Pinkblueberry · 15/04/2020 18:38

TOTAL LOCKDOWN - NOW or NEVER !!!

Ok. Never, then?

HugeAckmansWife · 15/04/2020 18:38

Yes actually. It is a wonder to me that you are bloody petrified. If you take a cold look at the stats, the number of average deaths in the same period last year and look at it over the last decade, the numbers really are not that huge. If anything I'm more concerned about those who don't seek treatment for other conditions which are far more like to kill them than CV. Given how you have ranged from '"visiting tesco'", to having a son that works there, inciting hatred against the whole of China, and SHOUTING LOCKDOWN NOW, I suspect you are either a troll or wilfully ignorant
Read the responses you've been given and get a grip.

Sennetti · 15/04/2020 18:38

its too late to 'do something'

delivery drivers will need to carry parcels/bags packed by god knows who!!! sod the 'customers' and not going into contact with them.....what about the staff??

fourpeasinapod · 15/04/2020 18:40

Ds doesn’t work in Tesco. He works in retail though but not Tesco

OP posts:
fourpeasinapod · 15/04/2020 18:41

I never said I hate China. I expressed annoyance at the markets they operate that have caused this

ACertainSupermarket · 15/04/2020 18:48

A lot of people where I work are wearing home-made masks. My friend says as she knows she touches her face an awful lot it really helps her to be conscious of that and not do it, so it really may help with preventing infection to the wearer via contaminated hands as well as stopping transmission from either a wearer or a customer who is infectious but not aware.
I never thought wearing face masks would be socially acceptable in Britain, but I do wonder if it will become the norm. The countries who routinely wear them in public, at least when in normal flu season, certainly seem to have had lower rates,

tigger1001 · 15/04/2020 18:50

Total lockdown where you can't even go to the supermarket? That's not happened anywhere - not even in China.

Total lockdown where people can't leave their house at all comes at a price too. I can't help but feel we are headed for a massive mental health crisis - and there will be no money to help.

Supermarkets would not cope with deliveries to every one and not all areas have supermarkets that deliver. Not everyone can afford a delivery. People would starve under your proposal.

It's a very scary time for us all. Yes in an
Ideal world shop workers would have ppe but the reality is ppe is in very short supply and health care workers have to take priority. Shops have taken steps to protect their staff - limiting the number of shoppers in the store/one war systems/screens etc.

ACertainSupermarket · 15/04/2020 18:52

@fourpeasinapod we are 'doing something'. If you are anxious now, how bad would it feel to be under whatever total lockdown would look like. And how would it work? People still need food, so even if the majority are at home the food industry and a delivery system would be a fair proportion of people not under total lockdown. Total lockdown would entail a police state - we don't have the police numbers, and getting the army in would be terrifying.

Greggers2017 · 15/04/2020 18:59

@tigger1001 we are heading for massive mental health crisis. I'm already feeling it. In our service we've already had 7 suicides plus extra deaths from overdose or alcohol withdrawal.

My daughters best friends dad commited suicide yesterday. His kids are 12, 11 and 10. People aren't coping.

Willow2017 · 15/04/2020 18:59

Retail workers can be protected through social distancing, handwashing

Try telling the customers that please? I have been leant over, brushed against just because a custormer couldnt say "Excuse me can I have something from that shelf?" A huge number of adults seem to totally lose all concept of distance once they are shopping. Wlking right beside you when they could move to the other side of an empty aisle, standing over you when you arent aware that they are there becasues you have your head in a shelf pulling stuff forward then glaring at you when you move for them. We seem to be invisible to some customers.
And as for handwashing...how often do you think we can leave the shop floor to wash our hands when shelf filling, facing up or removing empty packaging all day?

PickAChew · 15/04/2020 19:01

When do you propose that we come out of this total lockdown that you're so keen on?

And how do you know what staff in supermarkets have access to if you're so keen never to leave the house?

fourpeasinapod · 15/04/2020 19:03

The virus will subside one day. It won’t last forever. We need to have as minimum contact with each other as possible

OP posts:
SpiritEssence · 15/04/2020 19:03

OP I agree we should do but not given enough protection at all. We deal with thousands of customers every week more than quite a few other keyworkers except nhs and carers ofcourse. But I have noticed her on MN they really dont give a dam about retail staff. Even tho were feeding the nation and putting our health at risk.

Yes I'm also telling fully grown adults to keep 2 meters apart and follow the one way system but they dont.

tigger1001 · 15/04/2020 19:05

@Greggers2017 I'm so sorry to read that. People are under so much pressure and struggling to cope as you say. Add in financial pressures etc, it's a crisis of its own.

Willow2017 · 15/04/2020 19:07

Delivery drivers wouldn’t need to be in contact with the customers
They still need training, how long do you think thats going to take if everyone ordered stuff online? How many drivers do you think it would take?

TOTAL LOCKDOWN - NOW or NEVER !!!

Are you serious? Why the need for shouting??

TBH I have decided that after months in retail without any kind of PPE or hand sanitiser unless I provided my own until 3 weeks ago, if I havent caught it now with people coughing and sneezing all over me and their purchases, licking their fingers before handing me notes etc, I never will.

Notwiththeseknees · 15/04/2020 19:08

Local supermarket & pharmacy staff here in the French Alps all wear masks and have done for weeks. Also two out of the three supermarkets have Perspex screens now and the 2m distances clearly marked on the floor from the tills back for about 10m. I feel sorry for them having to serve all day long with the customers breathing on them.
Here in Chamonix though the customers are all very well behaved. No fighting or overcrowding, but in part that is due to the town only being 20% (at most) inhabited.

Orangeblossom78 · 15/04/2020 19:09

I think customers should only use self checkouts to be honest.

Willow2017 · 15/04/2020 19:09

BTW how would all those deliveries get made if staff were not there to pick them and package them up for customers? Staff would still be mixing together and more would be needed to cope with the demand not less.

Its not a solution at all.

HeresMe · 15/04/2020 19:48

TOTAL LOCKDOWN - NOW or NEVER !!!

No country in the world has had total lockdown, people do not understand what a total lockdown would entail.

They will complain when their bins don't get emptied there is no food being produced, the lights and communications and water go down ect. Many millions of workers are part of a big machine that keeps this country running.

LilacTree1 · 15/04/2020 21:44

“ We need total lockdown NOW. No more going out for exercise no nothing until this is finished”

Good thing I live in a tower block. I’m amazed we haven’t had a suicide yet.

LilacTree1 · 15/04/2020 21:44

Actually there was a very strong smell of petrol up here earlier but I couldn’t be bothered to investigate.
