To ask landlord to replace carpets

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 18:40

Been here 2 years place very dated not had a great deal to spend on it but tried my best however would like the carpets replaced and have suggested deducting cost from the rent.
Found carpets for £263 lounge, bedroom hallway.
Landlord is asking to go half and half but I dont have the money and too embarrassed to say that and also he has tried to sell the place previous so dont fancy the idea of spending out on it.
Now he is asking to do it next month but I suspect he is putting me off

I did suggest doing one room at a time over 3 months but he just simply said get me a cost estimate whereas previously I had said I can deduct cost from rent and sort it myself and he said sure but now he is putting it off

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:22

Basically I think he just doesnt want to spend the money

The carpets will be bought online and fitted by partner

Is he able to do it well? Just asking because I have seen plenty of people (thanks DH) bodge it -meanwhile DM (62) can fit kitchen flooring/vinyl & carpet like an expert!
You do need to tell LL if you can’t afford it though & that means you will have to live with what you have down, it sounds like he can’t really afford to spend on the place either.

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:25

I am stuck here and cant afford to move and my credit rating is hopelessSad

It is up to LL to chose a new carpet if that is what he wants to do. As a LL I would not allow a tenant to choose a cheap one as it will not last. How do uou kniw how old the carpet is? 15 or 20 years is a wide range and sounds like a guess. LL has been open with you he wants to sell it. It would not make sense to spend money on a new carpet if he is going to sell. If you don't like the property, look for somewhere else once out of lockdown. Rents take account of condition of property. Why did you move in if you sre so unhappy about heating, ceiling snd carpet?

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:26

Not sure about his own situation it's possible his business has stopped but I did find out he wanted to sell as he wants to start a nursing home

In which case, and this is said with kindness, are you not better putting the money you have and are willing to spend on carpet in a pot for a deposit or towards moving costs?

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:28

I'm not unhappy I do like it here I just thought it would be nice to now to get new carpets

TARSCOUT · 14/04/2020 19:29

How much do you pay in rent?

caringcarer · 14/04/2020 19:30

A LL would need to buy any item in their own name to allow them to claim it off their tax bill. No professional LL would allow a tenant to deduct it off their rent.

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:30

My whole income goes on keeping this place without anything left for extras like home improvements etc

OP posts:
Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:31

Rent is very small Tars at 425 per month

OP posts:
Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:32

But I only earn 1100 per month

OP posts:
Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:33

Do you have 6 months wages and a pension? If not, don't even consider paying for carpets. Even if it was your own property. Save up first before spending on luxuries.
I definitely wouldn't pay to recarpet someone else's house. He could sell it next month and you would have lost all your money.

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:37

I have no savings only a pension

OP posts:
Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:38

I having nothing left to save after all essentials gets worse doesnt it

DelphiniumBlue · 14/04/2020 19:40

Tell him your contribution will be fitting the carpet, which would normally cost ??idk, £100 per room??
If he doesn't agree to pay for the carpet ( which sounds pretty cheap btw), then in your position I think I'd go for rugs, which can be taken with you when you move.
I'd add that the problem with cheap carpet is that it doesn't last. But if you're only going to be there a few years, then that won't bother you.

notapizzaeater · 14/04/2020 19:41

Why can't you get UC ? Have you checked ? How much does DP earn ?

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 19:52

Dp doesn't earn anything and my name is on a property I dont live in.
My ex lives in it and I have no financial interest in it never paid the mortgage ex has always paid it and I dont get any money from him. Because there is alot of equity in it they are saying I have overc16.000 capital so I cant get universal credit council tax support nothing.

OP posts:
lovelydream · 14/04/2020 19:58

Why doesn't your DP work?

You can always ask the landlord but they aren't obliged - what might be worn to you might be acceptable to someone else. You've also only lived there 2 years - if you had been there say 10 years and been a good tenant you might have a stronger case with the landlord

mumwon · 14/04/2020 20:14

clean carpet & buy big rug to take with you when you go (Wilko's?) But ring fire brigade advise number actually still do this & see if its mentioned
scratch that I have been RLA site & basically he needs to remove them NOW they are a fire & health risk & on this site they mention rent office telling ll to remove them before they rent as well as fire brigade safety check saying the same thing & apparently ll insurance wont cover them either

Clappingforjoy · 14/04/2020 20:18

I am worried in case they have asbestos in them
