To want to go travelling instead of TTC?

DH and I were TTC before the virus hit.

Ever since lockdown I’ve found myself fantasising about us taking a career break and just going travelling for a few months once this is all over. Then I mentioned it to DH the other day and weirdly he seemed keen!

Has anyone ever done this? Are we mental? We’ve got plenty of savings but these were meant to be towards a house upgrade and potential maternity so it would mean putting those plans on hold for god knows how long.

Thoughts please!? Obviously nothing will be decided until covid has an outcome.

Depends on how long you are thinking of delaying it.

Realistically it may be 18 months/ 2 years before you can even go travelling. Who knows at this moment.

And then maybe travel for a year?

So start TTC when you are 30 realistically?

Its not too late of course and its definitely something you need to work out.also don't think it will necessarily happen quickly when you do TTC.

We started when I was 29 and DD was born when I was 33.

I say absolutely go for it. As long as you’re young enough to wait longer than do it. Once kids come on the scene holidays are not quite the same for a number of years until the kids grow up a bit. So enjoy it!!

Jesus, you're only 27, go travelling! The babies can wait! I'm a similar age and can't imagine TTC now!

Yes, definitely do it. Dh and I lived in Asia and travelled loads before we TTC. We were back in the UK just before but took one last trip backpacking around. It was amazing. It’s not the same with small children and it will be a decade or so before they are old enough to travel without having to make significant compromises. The early years with children are also really hard and it can take a toll on your relationship. The amazing years we had doing whatever we wanted and having a lot of freedom really helped through those tough times.

I did this, we were early 30s. Best thing we ever did. Definitely go if you can. We got a round the world ticket for 2k each and spent about 10k in total over 6 months. Don't worry about your career, if you've made one for yourself before you leave you'll be able to get it back when you return. I quit my fixed term job and husband quit his permanent one and went self employed when we came back. We both have the careers and family we want now and our trip didn't affect this at all in the medium term. We were a bit low on income for the first months after coming back but lived with my parents to help with this.

DH and I took 4 months out unpaid career break before I had my two children.

We went to South America
Africa (Namibia & Botswana)
India/Nepal/Bhutan

Do it!
Nothing had changed when we returned to work.
Cannot do it now-too costly with four people to pay for Sad

In theory lovely idea but in practice there may well be severe restrictions on where you can travel to for some time to come. Our daughter was due to go to an African country to work for a year after an July wedding. They have been told that the borders won’t be open for at least a year, so no wedding and no year on post-qualifying gap year.

BabyDues00n88 · 14/04/2020 21:26

This is not the year to be traveling

I'm expecting that travel insurance will increase in price next year

Looking at history, there have been 3 pandemics in the last 100 years
1918
1950s
Now

You could travel during maternity

Mummyshark2018 · 14/04/2020 21:40

Have you watched Race across the world? That's made me want to travel!

sunfloweryy · 14/04/2020 21:43

Totally get that it might not be feasible for a while, but love reading people’s stories Smile

@Mummyshark2018 yes! In fact thinking about it that might’ve been what kicked this feeling off Grin

Do it! But spend the next few months saving up like crazy.

It is so much easier to travel before kids. We got lulled into a false sense of security by seeing others travelling with kids- then we met our own insomniac babies!

It really does help to come back to a secure financial position though. Travel cheap and no-frills, and save the cash for reducing your overheads when you have a baby.
