Stop me panicking

I just ate a smoked mackerel (from a previously unopened packet) that I now realised was 1 day out of date. Realised before I fed it to my DD, but I'm pregnant and now panicking. Tasted fine - I mean, fishy but in a normal way

Calm down. You will both be perfectly fine.

YukoandHiro · 13/04/2020 17:45

I like your matter of fact remark. I can make something out of anything when I want to - I drive myself bonkers

They surely must leave a bit of leeway in the dates as they can't be that accurate so likely err on the side of caution, you'll be fine. If it was bad you would have smelt or tasted it :)

fourandnomore · 13/04/2020 17:47

Honestly it’ll be absolutely fine, imagine you’d got dates mixed up and hadn’t noticed, I’ve done that before and never had a problem.

Runnerduck34 · 13/04/2020 17:48

1 day out of date is nothing, the dates are only a guide. If it smelt ok and tasted ok , it was ok, you will be fine

Highonpotandused · 13/04/2020 17:48

It’s a ‘best before’ date, not ‘out of date’ date. So fine to eat if it smells and looks fine. Dread to think how much food people waste.

moobar · 13/04/2020 17:49

Absolutely fine.

It's a guide.

My sister once phoned me horrified because her chicken, in date, was clearly off. She was absolutely astounded this could be the case, the packet must have been broken or something but dates are just a guide. Use your taste, all will be ok.

chocolate26 · 13/04/2020 17:52

I'm pregnant and accidentally ate salmon that was 2 days out of date and I was absolutely fine. You will be okay, 1 day out of date is hardly anything 😊

YukoandHiro · 13/04/2020 17:56

@highonpotandused no it's a use by date - that's why I was worried

AvalancheKit · 13/04/2020 17:59

I tend to find that anything that is smoked lasts a lot longer than the stamped sell-by dates - smoking also acts as a preservative.

YukoandHiro · 13/04/2020 18:02

Thanks everyone. The fact that nobody has said "oh dear OP, watch out for symptoms" is helping.... sure it will be fine.
I had PNA with my daughter and can feel it creeping back in with this pregnancy especially with the coronavirus situation (so many of my appointments, including my glucose tolerance test as I had previous gestational diabetes) are cancelled or on the phone now

OP posts:
SlothRunner · 13/04/2020 18:05

The clock doesn’t get to midnight on the date on the packet and it suddenly goes off, you will be fine

maddy68 · 13/04/2020 18:06

One day? It'll be for many many days. Stop panicking x

Bluetrews25 · 13/04/2020 18:28

When pregnant the sense of smell is heightened, probably so we can smell when something is even the slightest bit off and therefore avoid it.
If it smelt ok to you, then it will have been fine.
Sometimes things go off early due to bad storage. Would you eat stinky chicken just because it was in date? No? Then let your nose and taste be your judge in this case, too.

fudgesmummy · 13/04/2020 18:31

It’s horrible being so anxious about everything isn’t it? (fellow sufferer 🙂)
I had listeria food poisoning when I was about 3/4 months pregnant with my dd.
Was a dreadful time but we were both ok 😁 (she is now 30!)

VerbenaGirl · 13/04/2020 18:35

I won’t repeat the wise words above, but totally agree that it will be fine. I used to worry like this when I was pregnant, and the current situation can’t help but exacerbate worries, but do try not to be anxious. Your body is designed to keep that bubba safe and well.
