To feel like a coward?

I am a 2nd year nhs student and i was sent home from placement...thankfully as we were offered no ppe ...i was scared.
My placement was cut short by 4 weeks. I think we have the choice to make up lost time by going back this summer ir we can or go back later and qualify later.
I feel like a coward but id rather start again in September ( as was original plan) as im scared of getting Covid 19.
I have nothing but admiration for some younger students who are desperate to go bk now. Why don't i feel desperate? I feel horror and fear. I was finding placement tough before Covid.

I don’t think you’re a coward.

Why were you finding placement difficult before? Was it just that particular placement?

malificent7 · 13/04/2020 16:26

I was finding it hard due to my anxiety.

Maybe have a rethink. It's never too late to start something new

You're not a coward at all. I'm terrified of going to work and bring something awful home to my family. I love caring for my patients but this virus is pretty grim. If I had a choice I'd not go in until it's all over.

You are definitely not a coward.
I 100% could not do it. I would leave and never go back if it was me.

Is your anxiety related to your training/placements/ expectations. Are you a student nurse? I’ve found a lot of 2nd years find it tough as you’re expected to know what your doing and depending on your mentor depends how much support and encouragement you get but quite often thrown in the deep end.
I’d leave it and restart in September absolutely no point in adding to your anxiety or putting yourself at risk if you don’t have to. Others will be all over themselves to be in the midst of it leave them to it. Take the summer off and consider yourself lucky then have a think about what your expectations are for your career.

It's great that some students were ready to "step up" and start working asap. BUT it is perfectly okay also to want to train within the normal timeframe. Do not feel bad, this is a unique situation, and you have been given a choice - and no one is judging you for the choice you made - to wait and not work just yet.

Your not a coward. I remember the 2nd year being the toughest for alot of students anyway without Covid. Uni have given you a choice. Choose the one that suits you best and go back in Sept with a clear conscience. It doesn't mean you won't make a fantastic nurse when your qualified.
The great thing about nursing is there's loads of different avenues you can take and you'll find the right area that suits you.
