AIBU to be curious about why I haven't seen the tabloids report on MNHQ getting the begging bowl out?

I don't avidly follow tabloids or anything, but given the speed at which they generally lift topics and comments from the talk boards, I'm surprised not to have seen any mention of this so far.

Has it been reported?

Maybe they don’t want to give MN the publicity

Because a subscription model is pretty normal and not at all interesting?

Because a subscription model is pretty normal and not at all interesting

Exactly this.

Loads of sites have subscription options its hardly groundbreaking

Lordfrontpaw · 14/04/2020 15:49

We had a long and involved discussion about online subscription models and the history---->future of journalism/media at the weekend.

I need to get ouuuuutttttttt!

It all depends I suppose. You can put a salacious spin onto pretty much anything.

One could take the suggestion of the company being on the brink of failure, as an example.

Because MN feeds what goes into the media.

Do bear in mind that Justine’s husband works for the guardian.make of that what you will.

Personally I think it isn’t newsworthy but then I didn’t think the whole moldies thing was either and it was talked about in the guardian, hmm funny that.

Lordfrontpaw · 14/04/2020 16:00

The Guardian and Observer operated very much in the red for a long time until almost crawling out just recently (now dropping back due to current circumstances).

Publishing generally operates on a shoestring these days because of new advertising models (and different consumption methods/more choice of info/news/materials available). Subscription is a sensible way to ensure a reliable revenue stream to pay for staff and the bills and to turn a profit (its a business not a charity after all).

Which might be a story in the financial section, not the gossipy bit. The DM etc don't print stories because they are from MN or because they think MN is intrinsically interesting. It's a handy source of stuff. MN itself isn't the story.
