To think that when this is all over, we should restrict Sunday trading again.

Just that really. Sunday's used to be special because all but the corner shop was closed and it encouraged an actual break. Now the weekends are gone in a flash and we're back on the treadmill.

This situation is making me reflective and wanting to slow down.

Recently visited Japan and their way of trading is so much better than ours. Tokyo Shops tend to open at 11am and be open to at least 7pm. Office workers can go shopping after work, little and often, rather than spending a precious weekend trawling stores for seasonal clothes, new shoes, art or decor.

The problem with our '24 hour' stores is that they sell generic clothing and home decor and I prefer to root around for something a bit different.

I work Monday to Friday and quite a lot of Saturdays do I not do my shopping them weeks?

Rosebel · 14/04/2020 19:10

People are saying Sunday's were boring but now they're not. Why? Because the shops are open. Is it really that much fun to go shopping, especially in the supermarket? I'd rather be at home than go shopping on a Sunday.
I always always used to go shopping in the evening after work. Couldn't be bothered to go shopping on the weekend.

I live in NI and our Sunday hours are restricted. The main shops / malls / supermarkets etc are only allowed to open from 1-6. It's the one piece of our backwardness that I don't want to change! Families need a day together to relax

Surely just don’t shop on a Sunday if you don’t want to? I work Sundays, I choose to as my husband works during the week and we don’t have to worry about child care for our youngest. My older child is at school but also has a Sunday just as well. It really suits some people that choose to not work a regular 9-5. Just because you’re busy Monday to Friday doesn’t mean everyone else is.

Good grief no. I agree with it in theory but thats a HORRENDOUS idea considering most shops are on their knees right now and about to go bankrupt. AWFUL idea.

I dont get this at all- shopping isn't mandatory. If you want a family day (which I totally get) then have at it. The shops arent forcing you not to have that. Just like the fact that churches are open on sunday arent "forcing" me to attend. We make our own choices dont we?

WitchQueenofDarkness · 14/04/2020 19:24

If you don't want to shop on Sunday then don't. I don't recall it being mandatory.

Why not push the boat out. How about closing mondays. And anyone household that has an adult who doesnt work Monday to friday, is banned from going in on weekends?

Then at least people who work mon-fri can get their shopping done, without it being full of people who could have gone during the week.

That would make weekends far slower and enjoyable for those that cant shop during the week. Shopping wouldnt take and hour and half and be so stressful if people who could go at a quieter time, did so.

John Lewis used to do this.

The shops aren't forcing you to go in.

I work shifts in the emergency services... Someone's Sunday is the only day I have to go shopping. Just because your life may fit nicely in with not needing to go shopping on Sunday doesn't mean everyones does.
