I've not been here as long as some others, but other than the @ and voting buttons has MN actually altered the forums in any significant way in the last 20 years?

I appreciate that some people like the simplicity of the site. But even if people don't want the actual functionality of the site to change, surely they could see the value in clicking a smiley or clicking a bold button, as apposed to having to manually implement these?

So TLDR: What's changed in the last 20 years?

The app has those.

Eggcited · 13/04/2020 16:57

The app has those.

Interesting. I don't have the app, it's pretty buggy for android so I tend to use the mobile site / desktop version. I wonder why they haven't updated these to include the same features.

The best emoticon has to be entered manually anyway...

CrocodileFrock oh YES we all changed our names to JustineHairnet and whatnot, to give each other pretend tellings-off. We were quite AWFUL, poor Justine had her hands full.

In the early days the number of posters was very small and thread replies much slower as we were on dial up! the variety of topics has expanded widely, some have come and gone, it was more of a parenting support forum with fewer commercial demands, felt less political and with less trolling.

LockedInMadness · 13/04/2020 17:12

I might not be getting the point here, about an edit function. Why don't you use the "preview message" option?

It's not on the app. In fact the app is pretty shite, it doesn't even have the date the op posts so no wonder there are zombie threads that are revived 🧟‍♀️
I'm betting the app will become amazing once we start paying though 🤔 if everyone hasn't jumped ship to mums chat by then

Imok · 13/04/2020 19:25

AIBU wasn't here when I started. Things definitely seemed kinder overall. I loved the secret Santa - donated for several years until it was spoiled by a few who decided to use it as a popularity contest. It was the wooly hugs for Zombie that inspired me to learn to knit and crochet.
The look of the site doesn't seem to have changed much.

00100001 · 13/04/2020 19:27

"There's going to be an edit function if you pay."

No, they said they might implement edit in the future if you pay.... Not the same.

Dddddddeborahh · 13/04/2020 19:37

It's an anonymous site - who gives a monkeys if you've cocked up grammar or text? I don't want an edit- so many people post goady posts , I don't want them to be able to change to ms nice and reasonable once people have responded in kind.
And put your own quotes - quotes will just make threads too long -they're interminable as it is .
Leave well alone -it works

The app has those.

I am on the app right now and I don't use the formatting button. I'm not entirely sure how to control it so I just stick with * or ^ manually

ChicChicChicChiclana · 13/04/2020 21:14

Of everything lacking on Mumsnet I just cannot get the huge, disproportionate amount of fuss over the bloody edit function!

Ffs, almost everyone on here is intelligent enough to understand what you mean even if you've made an annoying typo. We all do it.

Why is it such a massive bugbear? Really, why?

Typing errors are just not that important, imho. Hence I can't understand the fuss.

Oooh interesting. What did rosievio do?

Witchcraftandhokum · 13/04/2020 21:58

I've been here on and off, under various user names for 12 years. Technically not much has changed, it the users have. There's many more users, both male and female who aren't mums which is great. There's more hate, which isn't so great. I think what's predominantly changed for me is that now I don't admit to being on here, it's embarrassing.

SunshineCake · 13/04/2020 22:05

The edit is a red herring. Just reread what you've posted or even try the preview button before you post.

sweetkitty · 13/04/2020 22:12

16 years here. Joined after buying the book when I was 3 months pregnant with DD1.

Remember asking MN if my waters had broken or had I just peed myself.

Have made a few good friends here, met loads in RL some in the most horrible of circumstances (a child’s funeral).

MN helped me when I had a miscarriage, when my MIL died, my abusive narc mother.

What’s changed? It’s a lot more bitchy now posters seem to jump down others throats too quickly.

Wauden · 13/04/2020 22:16

However, people do point out when others are bitching and trolling which is much better than on other websites.

Fredthedoggie · 16/04/2020 00:01

Woolly hugs is still around

Our Christmas this yet was filled with items from their Christmas auction (including a fight over who was getting one item)

Wauden · 16/04/2020 18:29

Woolly hugs 😀 we could do with some now!

missingmydad · 16/04/2020 18:36

Woolly hugs sounds great..if I could knit I would make one now.

ormami · 16/04/2020 19:54

I've been here off and on for 12 years.

Honestly the features are so slow to change and very little has really changed since then.

I really would like a poll function like digital spy and it shows how people voted when they post

I like the reactions and quoting of mums.chat

I think mn really should revamp it all, i know people will complain but once they get used to it will be better :)

Wauden · 17/04/2020 15:04

@missingmydad
Grin and I would buy a knitted woolly hug Grin
