Front line NHS worker here. Thank you for your amazing support, we are working unbelievably hard in extremely stressful conditions, so thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.
There is just one teeny little thing though; we are not heroes, just normal people going about our jobs. I don't want to see kids of NHS workers waving their pictures around on telly. I'm finding it a bit much. Please don't fetishise us

I agree to an extent some of us are caring for those with COVID-19 but we are not trying to save their lives or making their death less painful ICU staff are and it’s an horrendous situation

I really feel those in care homes are really being over looked - they are basically having to care for those who won’t be admitted to hospital. They have built relationships with them and their families who they can’t see. Some homes have had a number of deaths that pressure on staff is absolutely awful (but as they are not nurses or doctors they are not held up to be as valuable to society- they are going above and beyond their roles many on a very low wage)

This won’t bring about the changes the the NHS desperate needs as now no politician will actually challenge this anytime soon (now isn’t the right time)

BovaryX · 15/04/2020 08:20

@BovaryX agree. The system is outdated and not fit for purpose any more. We needed an overhaul and I hoped for something like Germany's part insurance based system - their healthcare is excellent

Yes. Insurance is a factor in every single well functioning healthcare model. No other country on the planet emulates the UK. It is unfit for purpose and often legally incompetent. It is the fifth largest employer on the planet. Can you imagine? Next to a multinational mega corporation like Walmart. Its fanatical proponents ensure it will never adapt to the 21st century.

Why is this a problem?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/04/2020 08:22

Yes I agree look to Germany of France

We won’t go the way of America as we have a completely different approach culturally to healthcare. All that will happen is more is sold off privately (as has been for years) and the charges are to the NHS so less money can be spent on investment

BovaryX · 15/04/2020 08:27

Do you think the UK, with its relatively small population of 66 million, should have a national health service sandwiched between McDonald's and China's Natural Petroleum company in terms of employees?

myself2020 · 15/04/2020 08:30

The thing that bugs me is that nhs workers should not have to be heros. They should be safe, earning enough for a decent standart of living, with a reasonable work life balance.
if health system workers have to be heros, the system is broken

HowManyWoodChucks · 15/04/2020 08:31

I think instead of all the clapping and whatever, people should take a pledge not to vote for a political party that doesn't make investment in nhs, including pay rises for nhs staff, a central priority.

Actually I do all that already so I don’t need to substitute it for clapping. Personally I like the community spirit of it, I thank people I have no other way of thanking, I wave at my neighbours, make a bit of noise, embarrass my teenagers and then go safely back inside for another week. Frontline NHS staff don’t get that choice.

FWIW I have also made a point of personally thanking the people I am in contact with (my postie, bin men, milk man, delivery drivers, supermarket staff etc). It’s the least I can do.

Crunchymum · 15/04/2020 08:35

It started off as a nice gesture, it felt quite organic and it was a choice. Some of my road did it, others didn't.

Clapping for NHs staff was fine.

Fireworks, pot banging, playing a certain song, Chinese lanterns Shock Shock are not!!!

Now it's been taken over by all the bandwagon jumpers, the media, the "look at me crowd", the clapping Police - it is definitely being fetishised. GMB and This Morning are spearheading this - I'm out.

StrawberriCream · 15/04/2020 08:58

While it was a nice gesture when I suggested people donate some money instead as clapping isn't actually helping I was met with horror!

Laughalot20 · 15/04/2020 09:22

I see this morning that Morrisons are offering 10 per cent discount to NHS staff from tomorrow until mid July. You have to show valid NHS photo ID at the till.

I started to read some of the comments on the Facebook post, the “what about me -itis” is very very strong on there!

Nice gesture!
