Gift for a new mother?

Midsommar · 11/04/2020 15:56

My friend is due to have her first baby at the end of next month. I want to get the baby a gift or two (I'd post it of course due to distancing measures).
However I would like to include a little gift for the mother to be - would someone be able to give me any suggestions?
I do not have children so not sure what is an would be an ideal gift for a new mum!
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Much though I appreciated the sentiment I had bought a tube of nipple cream myself, thinking I would need it, but then got given lot of it (I've got at least 4 tubes) and actually haven't used any of it other than a free sample that came with my breastpump, I was really fortunate to not need it but now I feel awful I haven't used it Blush we've ended up co-sleeping too so alcohol was a no-no but obviously a bottle of gin will get used eventually, just not immediately Grin on the other hand, I got given some lovely bath stuff which has been really nice when I've been able to catch a few moments, hand cream, and nice snacks to eat when I'm feeding DD were also lifesavers! Anything I could eat balanced on her or with one hand was appreciated greatly Wink

Ask her. most of the stuff i got went into the bin/charity shop. its so personal

myself2020 · 12/04/2020 06:29

i got give: 2 pairs of pjs (tgat went to charity shop with labels on, not my taste), alcohol (down the sink, as i breastfed), chocolates (foodbank, i don’t eat much chocolate), perfume (bin), babyclothes in either tiny or huge sizes (charity shop as they either never fitted, or were summer items fitting around christmas).
just ask her what she needs wants

I was given a book called Letters To My Baby. You fill in letters for your child to open when they are bigger. Loved it! Nice to reflect and document a time that passes slowly when you are in it, then once its done you can't believe how quickly it went Grin

Definitely hand cream! That's my top gift for new mothers. Body creams / oils also good. And good quality dark chocolate!

One useful gift I received for the baby was pretty little clothes hangers. Baby clothes don't fit well on grown up clothes hangers and I was also given lots of pretty little dresses for my DDs which I didn't want to scrunch up in drawers.

I second a lovely cosy blanket suggested by a pp. Some of those fluffy socks too. Nothing worse than being caught short with an inconsolable baby without having more than a nightie on in the middle of a cold night!

OccasionalNachos · 12/04/2020 06:46

@myself2020 why would you put alcohol and perfume in the bin? Seems wasteful when it could be regifted.

FloggingMoll · 12/04/2020 07:20

I got a gift hamper made up by my best friend. Clothes and dummies for baby, magazines for me, chocolate and an enormous bottle of very good gin. I didn't drink it straight away, but I was bloody grateful for it a few months later.

I second a magazine subscription, my mum got one for me and I loved it. My db got me Netflix when I had dd so that I could watch it during feeds which was sweet. I also got some lovely hair and skin products that I used to feel more human (I like this kind of stuff anyway though). My auntie got me a specific cream for c section scars that was a godsend and my ds got me some lovely leggings and tunic type dresses so I could lounge in relative style.

It is a lovely thing to do for a friend.

cactus2020 · 12/04/2020 08:05

Lovely bath stuff.

Elizadoeslittle19 · 12/04/2020 08:06

@myself2020 - I understand giving clothes to charity shops... but why would you put alcohol and perfume in the bin seems very wasteful.... surely they could have been regifted. Or even giving away a box of chocolates.... would your DP not have eaten any, or any of your visitors?
I think the OP was hoping to give the gift to mum to be as a surprise so maybe she doesn't want to ask her, that's why she was asking for some ideas.

My DC are 8 and 11, and the presents that still stand out as bring them best were food. Snacks are great, but the bag of M&S ready meals, puddings, custard, teabags and biscuits is what I remember. I give local people a meat pie from the butcher’s or vegan/veggie pie from the del, some prepped veg, soup and apple crumble.

For people further away, look at Cook, for online contactless deliveries.

febbb · 12/04/2020 08:28

A nice flask! I never had one and wasted so much tea/coffee

myself2020 · 17/04/2020 16:56

@Elizadoeslittle19 foodbanks don’t take alcohol or perfume. and i don’t know anybody interested - both are very personal. similar for chocolates given in summer when its warm - not really re-giftable.
