To not treat wasp nest asap

PotteryLottery · 11/04/2020 13:06

I can see wasps going into our bathroom extractor fan from our roof fascia by our bedroom window but our council website says not to treat until end of June as nests too small until then.

Council won't attend so I'd have to hire a private pest control service.

Have I got to look at these flying in and out for 2 months...yikes!

Just burn the place to the ground, tbh.

It's too soon for wasps, we're at the very start of the bee season. It will be tree bees or bumble bees. You'll hear them buzzing inside but the nests don't get particularly big and they should be gone by the end of June..
Bumbles are placid, tree bees not so much but if they are high up you should be fine.
Hopefully, we'll be out of lockdown before you have any trouble with them and a pest controller can have a look at removing the nest and relocating them.
I run a pest control company (husband has pneumonia so whole family business is shut down for now). I've been receiving these type of calls for the last week (same every year). If I had a pound for every call I had in April, May and half of June about wasps I wouldn't have to work! 😁

Rafflesway · 11/04/2020 13:18

OMG you poor thing. ☹️

Nope, they would have to be got rid of immediately. I am terrified of them and this, to me, is the stuff of nightmares. 😱

HollysBush · 11/04/2020 13:19

So do tree bees look like wasps then?

GoldBoo · 11/04/2020 13:29

It's too soon for wasps

The wasps that have been flying around my garden for the past 3 days disagree with this statement.

VeganVeal · 11/04/2020 13:59

Turn the fan on and suck them out

mumto3boysHE · 13/04/2020 10:41

Tree bees are round and fluffy, a smaller version of our big bubble bee.

TidyDancer · 13/04/2020 10:44

It's not too early for wasps, but it's too early for the nest to be treatable. That's why councils/pest control firms won't come out yet.

PrivateD00r · 13/04/2020 10:45

Definitely not too soon for wasps. Some private companies are still operating, Rentokil are.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 13/04/2020 10:49

Our wasps are early this year. I agree you should treat later as the nesta are not established. A bathroom extractor fan area should not give you too much aggravation. Private companies will be happy to take your money, doesnt mean its the best thing

VenusClapTrap · 13/04/2020 10:51

Just ignore them.

Haggisfish · 13/04/2020 10:52

We had this too. I ignored and they were gone by June too.

ThusSpoke · 13/04/2020 10:55

It's too soon for wasps

There were a couple in my garden yesterday.

sanityisamyth · 13/04/2020 11:06

Some wasps look very much like bees

sanityisamyth · 13/04/2020 11:07

And the other way around!! It's more likely to be a bee at this time of year

ToelessPobble · 13/04/2020 11:10

I thought we had wasps but the pest control people who came out said they were juvenile bees. Looked identical to wasps as thought they were too skinny to be bees

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/04/2020 11:17

So do tree bees look like wasps then? Tree bees look like bumblebees in shape, they have fluffy ginger shoulders and a white bum. But seeing them up above your head against the sky milling around at the entrance to a nest, yes, they will look like wasps.

Wasps are useful predators in the garden, no need to remove a nest unless it's causing you real problems.

Branster · 13/04/2020 11:17

I had two wasps in my house yesterday so not too early for them. No idea where they come from or how to deal with the problem but I suspect they have a little nest very near to the house.

PriscillaPresley · 13/04/2020 11:34

We had wasps last year. They were going in the vents under the eaves. I was intending to leave them but the weird scratching was keeping me awake.

So we got the pest controller out. He said the noise was them eating the wood to make the nest. He said he had one man who left it and they ate all the way through the ceiling into his bathroom! 😱

So we got him to treat it.

So if you decide to leave it, just be aware they'll be in there eating your house. He said they also eat the plastic around the vent.

TidyDancer · 13/04/2020 13:50

Big national companies like Rentokill will always come out no matter the likelihood of the treatment working. They usually charge ridiculous amounts as well, trading on their name.

Wait for a while and use a small independent contractor.
