To be appalled by this

I was recently added to a Facebook page, friend of a friends’ aunt selling beauty products.

I had a quick look at the page and noticed the “consultant” is asking people to donate money to “buy” hand creams for NHS staff. I then quickly researched the company and realised that the “consultant” will make about 30% commission on these donations.

I’ve declined joining the page- but I’m appalled, surely this is immoral to be cashing in on the NHS at this time? Maybe they’ll donate their commission.

AIBU?

Tbh I think it's quite obvious.

When you buy off these people, they get commission. Why would buying hand creams for NHS staff be any different.

You are buying a product to donate. Standard terms apply.

Yep it is disgusting. It Will be one of the vile mlms doing it.

Janek · 11/04/2020 09:18

The person I saw doing this also said they were donating their commission to buy hand cream too. You could ask if this is the case here.

A neighbour of ours was doing this, she wanted contacts in the nhs, something about needing an nhs contact to agree to become a ‘consultant’ (paying the £198 starting fee no doubt) and then being able to receive donations. She’s a very nice lady and quite vulnerable so we were very gentle in telling her that the company is a disgusting parasite and cashing in on a global disaster.

Was it Neal's Yard?

slashlover · 11/04/2020 09:28

When I buy items in a shop to put in a foodbank collection point, the supermarket makes a profit on the item. This isn't any different really.

Thehop · 11/04/2020 09:30

I’ve seen this too

slipperywhensparticus · 11/04/2020 09:31

Body shop are doing this or buy one get one donated to the nhs free

Dollyparton3 · 11/04/2020 09:32

Yep, there's been a few threads on this. Tropic skincare are doing it which destroys their big ethical brand claims in my view

howsicklyarsekissy · 11/04/2020 09:34

Body shop consultants don't make commission on charity donation products.

kenandbarbie · 11/04/2020 09:40

I just find it I'm really poor taste tbh.

I've always had a huge issue with the profiteering which goes alongside many charity donations. Supermarkets and shops make millions out of people buying stuff to donate. Schools are the worst, often holding competitions for who can donate the most pet food, Christmas boxes etc etc. Ask for money and then do a deal with a wholesaler to supply goods at way below retail prices. The money goes so much further.
