The reality of having to go to work on mnw during lockdown

I don't expect claps or pan's banged. I just hope for people to not be waaah! Woe is me 3wks on. My daily life hasn't really changed and yet I'm as full of fear as the next person. I'm in no way a hero, but the reality is no work, no pay... So what do u do? There's so many of us in the same boat with no option to not... Why are some folk still moaning when they at least have the option to stay at home albeit on a 20% cut? And no it's no one up manship... Its just stating some folk either work or get 0%

I get it, it’s hard - I certainly can’t relate to all the posts and memes about being bored at home because I’ve never been more busy. And it must be frustrating that you perceive yourself as taking on all this risk for beggar all pay when others are sat at home.

You’re clearly stressed, so I’ll be gentle:

You say it’s not one upmanship; but that’s exactly what you’re doing by saying people shouldn’t moan. If they stopped being upset would it make your situation magically better?

Life is shit for a lot of people right now, that 20% cut that you think people shouldn’t be moaning about could mean people are struggling to work out how to feed their children.

Who do you work for? Do they have an employee assistance programme or anything for you to call and unload to?

I totally get how you feel, where my son works there is none of this keeping 6ft apart, no soap, no hand sanitisers, no gloves, no masks, no sick pay, no furlough. They have 2 choices, Work or Resign, leaving to self isolate equals resigning, so he works, I ask him to stop but he says they need the money, I tell him the money is no good to him if he's dead, I'll try to help him out but I can never match his wage, his gf who he lives with is Polish so they are entitled to zero top up/housing benefits and have their DD to look after. There are people queuing up to take their jobs :-(

I just hope Covid19 can't be transmitted in food, if it can and it gets in that factory then we're all fucked

This situation gives people lots if time to look at others and think the grass is greener.

You are a hero. It might not feel like it, you might wish you didn't have to be one but you are one by default.

It takes amazing people to do what you do and when this crisis is over, I hope people like you get rewarded one way or the other because if there's one group that deserves it, it's you.

Me too, 10 hour shift today. Redeployed nurse, never sure what the day will being. 🥺

YouStupidBoy · 11/04/2020 06:56

I am still working and although not nmw, not on great pay either. I do feel slightly anxious about going to work every day but in reality there is no choice and the work still needs to be done.

I keep reminding myself that I am extremely fortunate to at least have a job that is not at risk and to still be being paid as normal. I do envy people wfh on full pay and do envy people at home but unable to wfh on full pay in one way, or those able to observe social distancing properly at work - but in another at least I still have structure and feel as if I am contributing; I imagine that I would feel frustrated at home and lacking control.

I am not sure that there is anyone (or very few people) in an ideal position right now.

Thousands of factory workers in my town on nmw. No company sick pay.
When friends message to see what you've been up to that day and you have to once again explain er... an eight hour shift.

flowerycurtain · 11/04/2020 09:53

Completely agree. There's a lot of unsung factory workers.

Grasspigeons · 11/04/2020 10:18

I am not nmw but i do go into work and have the odd moment where I think - gosh i earned £9.21 for that hour, i wonder if thats the hour where i catch covid19 and bring it home to my family. But then i know all the hours add up to food on the table and the real key workers being able to go to work. I dont do anything hard. Im the first aider at a school hub and i havent even had to do much first aid as its so few children. I have washed a few scraped knees and helped children change after a toilet accident, given some meds and dish out the lunches etc.
I feel a bit dissassociated from the lockdown as i havent really experienced it. I think a lot of it is just people rationilising their own experience.
