Annoying neighbours (diagram)

Disclaimer - I know they’ve done nothing illegal and I can’t do anything about it. Just inconsiderate and annoying.

I live in terraced housing. The road that runs parallel is also terraced housing. I have included a diagram to show the layout.
All of the back gardens of the houses behind us as far as I can see have hedges running along the back fences. The gardens are staggered (so mine and my next door neighbours dividing fence is in the middle of the garden behinds back fence if that makes sense, shown in diagram).
I’ve seen three grown men and also a woman who doesn’t really go in the garden (not sure of any kids). The men are in the garden all day every day. In the last few days they’ve decided to remove the hedges on the half of their back fence that go across the fence that’s between my garden and theirs. Then put a bbq in this section. Their garden is huge as I can now see right into it. Mine is quite small. So the last few days they’ve been peering into my garden over the top of their rather short back fence while standing around their bbq for hours.
It’s so annoying as I feel that I can’t enjoy the sun without these men looking at me. DH jetwashed our patio yesterday which was obviously quite loud but took less than ten minutes and as soon as he turned it on the neighbours head was over our fence looking. I’m tempted to not even bother getting the paddling pool out for DD2 seeing as they’ll be able to see her.
Also my downstairs toilet is at the back of my house and for some reason was built with a clear window which they can see into now and even more so at night so I’ve been weeing in the dark.
Why couldn’t they have just had their bbq somewhere else in their garden without putting it right where it’s invading my privacy? Do they not want their own privacy? As now me and DH have full view of their garden.

They haven't done anything wrong by cutting the hedge but I'm surprised they would want to limit their own privacy as well as yours. Is it possible their hedge was getting difficult to manage so they decided to take it out? We used to have a very tall conifer hedge the whole length of our garden but it really started blocking out the light and sucking the moisture out of the lawn so we put in beech hedges instead. They did take years to get up to a decent height BUT we did put 6 foot fencing behind them for privacy. Could you do that so that you do at least have immediate screening?

And blimey the neighbour looking into the loo!! Report him! And put up anything while you change the glass to frosted - even cardboard!!

Collaborate · 21/04/2020 05:12

OP - that’s an offence and the neighbours could make a complaint to the police.

slashlover · 21/04/2020 06:59

Are you saying he was standing at his bedroom waiting unless you went to the toilet? Get a roller blind or the film for the bathroom window because technically you are the one standing half naked in front of a clear window.

Your NDNs hedge has nothing to do with you and he is entitled to cut his own hedge. Put up your own fence.

hesgotit · 21/04/2020 07:12

The hedge is gone, that's it!

So you need to get back your privacy!

Starting with window film for your bathroom, available from amazon for less than £10. That's the first thing sorted.

Next put up your own fence and or trellis, that will stop the second problem?

To be honest you're not taking on ways to sort this, you just keep saying but they're looking etc.... just put up your own privacy measures and it'll stop the problem.

Surely it is nesting season?
I thought cutting hedges is illegal during nesting season?

AntiSocialDistancer · 21/04/2020 07:31

Dont get window film. Not all of them work when you turn the light on.

Temporarily use a piece of cardboard on most of the glass. Then you can come up with a better long term solution like blinds.

JudyCoolibar · 21/04/2020 07:43

happened to look out the window and behind neighbour is stood at his bedroom window staring into my bathroom.

Surely it has always been obvious that if you have a clear window in a downstairs bathroom then others can see you from upstairs windows? Why didn't you sort it out months ago?

JudyCoolibar · 21/04/2020 07:45

And blimey the neighbour looking into the loo!! Report him!

If someone is standing naked in front of a clear downstairs window, it's not the person who sees them who is committing an offence.

hopeishere · 21/04/2020 08:01

It's annoyingly but just get a roller blind and put up a fence.

It's still not clear who owned the hedge between your garden and BBQ garden. If it was yours then you could ask them to replant it.

FGS ... there's are a number of new inventions to prevent people looking through your windows .
All of which can be installed in less than an hour.

Curtains
Blinds
Window frosted film.

In this aspect you are being a real drama llama .

As for the bbq . Simply have a fence put up inside your boundary.

None of this is hard even at the moment. Window coverings can be ordered online and fence panels from Band Q website. (bit of a wait but they are still delivering.
