Posting here for traffic... an old friend FaceTimed this evening and was tipsy after some wine, she told me a funny story about a colleague she's had for 4 years who she's been calling the wrong name for all that time! He's got a reserved personality so was probably too polite to tell her! FFS the names aren't even similar, think John vs Thomas 🤣🤣
It reminded me of when myself and DH bought our first house years ago and our friendly elderly NDN told us all the info about the other neighbours including names, jobs, religions etc.. anyhow we sent Christmas cards to them all a month later including one to 'Dear Christian' and we often said hello, he seemed like a nice guy... It was only when we took in a couriered package for him almost a year later that we realised his name was Michael!! The penny dropped that he was a regular churchgoer so a practicing Christian!! I felt morto as it was like writing to our other neighbours "Dear Muslim/Jew"! Anyhow he saw the funny side and actually said he wondered why we pointed out his religion every time we said hello!! Again another one who was just too polite for his own good! Can anyone beat that with their wrong name stories?

In the 80's when my aunt and uncle had their second child (my cousin) the new baby was always referred to as 'the baby or the munchkin' even by his 2 year old big sister! It got to the point where we'd have to think about it for a minute before remembering his actual name! It had to stop once and for all when my Grandma asked her grandson his name when he was nearly 2 and he didn't know, then she asked his older now 4 year old sister what his name was and she said thought for a moment before saying slowly Munchkin?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hahaa to the other baby name forgetters! I’m always just like “how’s your son?” And “how’s your baby?”

Hopefully at some point his name will come up again.

Quite similar with another friend’s husband of 5 years. They live abroad and speak a language with another alphabet so I never see him in person and I can’t see his name written on social media in English. Lots of “how’s your husband?” 😂🙈

These are great! @butterfly and @spied you have actually made me laugh out loud for the first time in days, thankyou!

I was referred to by the wrong name at my wedding by the person marrying us. For example she said Zoe instead of Chloe. She was icily corrected by my mam, I was just trying not to laugh. It really settled my nerves actually.

The man off the meat counter in Sainsbury's calls me Caroline (my name is nothing like Caroline)

It's been this way for about 10 years and I've never been able to tell him as it's gone on for far too long

MozzchopsThirty · 11/04/2020 18:03

@TerrorWig 😂😂😂 my name is Catherine and the meat counter man calls me Caroline

I have an ltalian surname but normal British first name. Our work email system is set up that surname appears first in our email address. But I sign off with my normal first name. The amount of people who get my obvious surname and normal first bane is ridiculous.

ilovepixie · 11/04/2020 18:30

I work with a lady called Agnes, il always calling her Agnus

insideoutsider · 11/04/2020 18:34

So embarrasing! I can't correct him either!

My name is not a British name but sounds like a popular singer's name (think Madonna) so about 6yrs ago while being introduced to a client, my colleague said 'Meet Nadonna, like the singer'. Till this day, the client calls me Rhianna Confused. He's all serious when he says it too!
My only explanation is that he saved the name in his head as a singer with a 'different' sounding name!

Dhs cousin had a baby. I was sure I'd been told his name was Taylor, because I'd remembered that it was a surname. So I wrote a card to Taylor. The babies name was Riley. Luckily the child's granddad intercepted the card before it was given to the parents.

Also my daughters name is Rosa and every health professional we've ever met has called her Rossa. It's only health professionals, the desist, health nurse, hospital administraters, doctors.
It's quite annoying, Rossa isn't even really a name.

Barbararara · 11/04/2020 19:00

People constantly get my name wrong to the point where I don’t bother correcting them after an initial attempt, because we both know they mean me and it just seems a bit petty to keep on about it (Might need to work on my self esteemHmm) and generally it doesn’t get through to them anyway.
The problem is that people who do pick up on the distinction, and make the effort to get my name correct, insist on correcting the first lot. It is toe curlingly embarrassing to be shown up, particularly when I’ve been answering to the wrong name for years. Blush

I took up italian lessions a while ago & the teacher cant pronounce my name. The first lesson he made an effort & i kept correcting him, 20 lessons later and he still pronounces it wrong, ive just left him to it now, as the way the letters are pronounced its easier for him.
My names Faye & he pronouces it fi-yah kinda like fire Grin
