We need our guttering fascia etc replacing the builder can fit us in next week. We have said he cannot enter our house at all (toilet drinks) is it ok to proceed with the work??

Yes,you have my permission..

FizzyPink · 10/04/2020 22:20

I’m guessing you’ll get a lot of no’s on here but we’re considering having our front garden done by a friend as we don’t have any other outdoor space so I’d say go for it

AmelieTaylor · 10/04/2020 22:20

If they are permitted to still be working and you'll have no contact with them, then it can't be against the rules can it?

My personal stipulation would be that they had to be local

WallyDancre · 10/04/2020 22:20

Toilet drinks?

Is the builder a dog?

Ohwiseone · 10/04/2020 22:26

Please don’t consider getting any work done that involves perhaps someone climbing ladders, drilling, cutting etc. If the contractor were to injure themself, fall off ladder for example, they’d require valuable NHS resources, possibly an ICU bed, which currently are needed to help covid-19 patients recover. I understand that self employed need to try and keep working but the NHS and A& E are so overstretched.

*Toilet drinks?

Is the builder a dog?*
Lol Grin
Seriously though can't it wait till after lockdown?

Malvinaa81 · 10/04/2020 22:29

You already know you are being stupid, so don't come here for validation.

Arnoldthecat · 10/04/2020 22:32

There may be occasions when you simply have to let someone into your home for urgent repairs.

If this happens then before they come in,arrange for all members of your family to stay in one room together and shut the door. Open doors and windows to provide good through ventilation.

Have a doorstep discussion before they enter and agree that you are all free from symptoms. If anyone in the house has symptoms the caller may need to take further precautions.

Whilst in the home, maintain distance between you and the person.

Keep time in the house down to a minimum.

Maybe guidance is different where you are to where I am (isle of Man) but you would both be breaking the law here, and as much as I disagree with some of what they have implemented I can’t argue with this particular rule.

It’s not essential, so it shouldn’t be getting done

jojobar · 10/04/2020 22:34

There's 2 house s in my street where builders are still working. People still have to earn a living especially if not covered by the measures the govt have put in place.

I've got a couple of outside jobs that really need doing, if I see anyone in those trades still working locally I'd happily employ them.

counttotenandbreathe · 10/04/2020 22:34

Thankyou people I was only asking not sure it warranted being called stupid but heyho. @ohwiseone thankyou for justifying a very valid negative that I hadn't considered.

I an wondering this also as we have some work that needs doing on the house to make it watertight, ideally we would like to do this when the weather is good in the summer. It is all very well people saying 'don't do it during a lock down' but what if it goes on and on for months and then we are getting close to the bad weather seasons again? If you have a problem with your roof are you supposed to let it just leak and leak and cause other problems from water damage?

Gingerkittykat · 10/04/2020 22:47

Yup, I knew the scaremongerers would be out. The chances of a builder falling off a ladder and needing an intensive care bed are so small it is not worth considering.

My gardener cut my grass the other day, what if he had run over his foot and needed to go to A and E?

Ludo19 · 10/04/2020 22:50

Get it done you are not breaking any laws there are no laws only guidance.....so far!

No need for name calling either x

@WallyDancre hilarious comment

Rebootingagain · 11/04/2020 01:09

Wish it was like that where we are.

Carpets all paid for - can’t be fitted so bare floorboards.

Doors all paid for - can’t be fitted so no privacy, soundproofing or fire protection.

All trades are closed down for the foreseeable. Lockdown in a nearly finished house is miserable. We don’t even have electric on the top floor
