Girls and boys shorts? Why are girls short short?

sweetkitty · 10/04/2020 19:42

I have 3 DDs, one almost 16, one 14 and one almost 12. Every year when I go to buy shorts the girls ones are always short or thigh length and the boys knee length.

The older one is happy to wear shorts up her bum lol but the other two won’t. It’s easier now DD2 is woman sized she can wear longer shorts for women. The 12yo is skinny and tiny so even a size 6 would drown her. She hates the really short shorts and the shortie PJs. So the only option is boys ones, denim might be ok.

So AIBU that young girls shorts are up their thighs/bums yet boys are knee length? Smacks of sexism to me?

My DDs are only 7&8 and it drives me (and them!) crazy as well. Thin material, and short.

They chose a couple of pairs of boys jogger material knee length ones for when they want to do their real 'outdoor' stuff (like woods, mountains etc) and leave the girls ones for playing in the garden. Last year they got highlighter yellow ones in Next.

I thought teens were into that that (bad!) showing the bottom of arse cheek look?

HandfulOfFlowers · 10/04/2020 19:54

I think M&S do longer girls shorts?

Nomoreweeping · 10/04/2020 19:54

I hate this too. My kids aren't teens yet, but I remember hating it myself. I buy boys shorts for my girls, as there's no body shape difference anyway at their age, but as a teen I always bought board shorts. Usually billabong/ quiksilver type retailers used to do longer shorts that were still for girls in terms of shape, too accommodate hips.

CaveMum · 10/04/2020 19:55

My DD is 6 and I feel the same way. When she was at nursery I always bought her shorts from the “boys” section - knee length and no bloody frills. Since she’s started school (and is more conscious of “girl/boy” things) I buy her the cycle shorts that Sainsbury’s sell - same material as their leggings but knee length.

Oh yes. Females must be taught that their clothes should be 'attractive' rather than practical from as early as possible.

Amymayapple · 10/04/2020 19:57

Even as adults we are dealt with sexism in the fashion industry. Women's clothes are all tight and revealing.

I have started going into the men's section to be able to buy proper jumpers, shorts and trousers

LookingGlassMilk · 10/04/2020 19:58

YANBU, this drives me mad. I buy my 6 year old dd shorts from the boys section.

enterparentone · 10/04/2020 19:58

FatFace were selling longer girls ones last year

LittleTopic · 10/04/2020 19:58

It’s the same for women. I spend an age looking for knee length shorts that aren’t Lycra cycling ones Angry

PicsInRed · 10/04/2020 19:59

Yes! Beyond frustrating.

Don't get me started on pockets. Hmm

FreeButtonBee · 10/04/2020 20:00

I agree. Just had to buy my daughter boys shorts - even Boden only had bum flashing ones. So annoying. She wants to climb trees and kick a football, not flash her arse

Hmmmm2018 · 10/04/2020 20:00

Whole heartedly agree my 10 Yr old DD has been unhappy about this for some years, and every time she needs new shorts we hunt and hunt and hunt for longer ones with little luck. The younger one I just put in "boy" shorts

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 10/04/2020 20:02

This is even a problem I have with my toddlers. Boys shorts are just above the knee or mid thigh, girls shorts are basically hotpants even for bloody babies. Makes me so cross. I buy everything from the boys section for her but if she wants to wear feminine clothes as she gets older it'll be hard to navigate.

emilybrontescorsett · 10/04/2020 20:03

So true op.
Same with children's shoes. Boys ones are far more practical, girls ones don't have thick gripping soles and are often not a full shoe.

PlanDeRaccordement · 10/04/2020 20:04

Yes. This has been going on forever I think. But in past twenty years, girls clothes have seemed to get more sexualised. Fashions that a teen would wear being sold in little girl sizes. Cropped tops, tiny shorts or skirts.

My youngest DD actually wears boys shorts or long ankle length summer skirts.

I don’t like it for myself either now that I am older. I don’t want to wear granny shorts but I’m too old to be flashing that much leg!

Bluebooby · 10/04/2020 20:05

Yanbu. Annoys me so much when shopping for my DD.

Kitsandkids · 10/04/2020 20:06

Totally agree. This year my daughter will be 3. Her summers aged 1 and 2 she was either in dresses or ‘boys’ shorts as the ones for little girls were all ridiculously short - her nappy would have shown! This year, even though she’s moving into age 4-5 clothes in general, I think last year’s ‘boys’ age 2-3 shorts will still be a decent length on her. I got a nice pale pink chino type pair in Primark last year in the boys section. The girls section was just full of tiny pairs where the crotch was lower than the leg holes! And they all seemed to be fluorescent colours which I’m not too keen on.

TiggeryBear · 10/04/2020 20:08

I hate it too. Especially when sending DD to the childminder. I used to buy boys shorts from Matalan. They've worn excellently & DS is now wearing them 2 years later.

coldwarenigma · 10/04/2020 20:09

Even as an adult I find this, or when I do find womens shorts they inevitably are cut so they look more like culottes. I dont like clingy clothes so end up buying mens t shirts and hunt for shorts that aren't hotpant or culottes, and never look 'nice' in them.

MoltoAgitato · 10/04/2020 20:10

It’s the same for sodding pyjamas, for goodness’s sake! My DS’s pyjama shorts (aged 4-5) are twice the size of my DD’s (age 7-8)

isittheholidaysyet · 10/04/2020 20:13

Isn't it the same for women as well.
I'd love some knee length shorts. I can either get halfway up my thigh (so shows far too much when I sit down) or below the knee.

My 9 year old finally gave in and let me buy her some boy shorts. Had to be new though, not her brothers' cast offs.
Don't know what we'll do as she grows.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 10/04/2020 20:13

Next a couples of years ago and proper shorts in. Adult sizes but they for quite small and possibly in the kids section too
