To think my toddler pees too much?

I know the title sounds odd but I am a long term posters named changed a few times, and I'm really struggling with toilet training.

My toddler DS will be three in a matter of weeks and now is the perfect time to potty train and I'm not too sure if everything is 'normal', if he isn't ready or if it's a mixture of both.
I can't remember having these problems with DS1 but that was almost 7 years ago and not something I remember clearly.

So DS knows what a toilet is for, knows what a potty is for, can tell us when he has popped in his nappy, shows an interest in the toilet. This seemed like a good time to toilet train given we can't go anywhere.

I have always thought DS2 pees quite a lot compared to other toddlers/from memory when thinking of DS1. For example he could have pull ups changed at 8am to be soaked and hanging off by 10am, still soaks through to his clothes at times. However I believed this was just due to the nappy.

Today we have had 1 successful use of the potty and a dribble, after he went on the floor. My issue though is that since around 10am today, when he got dressed, DS2 has went for 7 or 8 wees, in around 5 hours. I'm not talking about little bits here and there, but proper soaked clothes/underwear, couch cushions etc and at times it's as though he doesn't even realise it has happened, yet sometimes he does.

From speaking to others it seems like this is quite a lot. He could probably double the amount by bed time tonight. No other toileting issues but, after speaking to friends and googling I'm now in a panic that something isn't quite right.

Aibu to worry? Is this normal? Should I phone a GP? Am I being daft?
Do I just go with it and plod along with toilet training?

I didn't mean to enable voting, but going with it:
Yabu - this is normal.
Yanbu - this isn't a normal amount.

And for those who may ask, he has had a cup and a half of weak diluting juice in this period of time (a cup being a small water bottle, so maybe around 500-700ml of fluid).

Does he drink a lot? My daughter who’s 5 goes about 4 times a day I guess. Sometimes a bit more

And he's week's again.
In the space of about an hour we've had three full pees.

He does have days when he drinks a lot. Today has been a small cup of milk with breakfast, maybe 150-200ml? Then diluting juice, another 300-500ml. He last drank at around 1.30ish ...

That does seem a lot to me but my DD is only 14mo so I'm no expert. She certainly doesn't soak through nappies in a couple of hours though.

whiplashy · 10/04/2020 16:23

diabetic?

billy1966 · 10/04/2020 16:24

Is he a thirsty child OP?

Whymustyoubringinthebirds · 10/04/2020 16:24

I've just toilet trained my LG and she does fairly big pees about every 30mins but is dry for naps and not a lot of pees overnight but the pees
She has had about 1l of liquid today I reckon

PixiePowered · 10/04/2020 16:31

He can be quite thirsty at times but then my older DS doesn't drink enough and I'm not too sure what 'too thirsty' would be counted as.
I know the links between thirst, frequent urination and diabetes which is why I'm worried. I have even read things like overactive bladder, incontinence issues etc.

I am repeating what someone else has said. Type one diabetes four T’s to look for toilet, thirsty, tired & thinner. Maybe just how your son is some people do go to the toilet more than others but always worth knowing. If your concerned talk to the doctors or even take them to a health visitor clinic if you don’t want to bother the gp, I’ve done this a couple time if I want advise they see children all the time and get questions about all different children So have a wide knowledge. X

wineymummy · 10/04/2020 16:32

I saw the gp about something similar with my dd when we potty trained her (I thought maybe a uti). GP suggested it could be diabetes insipidus. We ruled it out when dd settled down a week or so later, I think she was just overzealous about using the loo. Might be worth reading about tho. It's associated with extreme thirst.

PixiePowered · 10/04/2020 16:35

@DailyDuckie no excessive tiredness, has just recently given up his last nap of the day and goes 7.30/8.30 through to 8.00/8.30ish. Slightly grumpy near dinner time but this has only been 1.5/2 weeks of no naps so still new. Definitely not thinner either. Do all 4 Ts need to be there?

@wineymummy I would say it isn't new. We could easily go through 8/9 nappies a day, even recently. He had obviously peed more but one pee in a nappy isn't as noticeable as the floor or pants.

It does seem a lot, I remember maybe 3 or 4 full pees in a morning or afternoon. Maybe keep a note of times he pees and amounts he’s drunk?

Pippapotomus · 10/04/2020 19:09

If you're worried about diabetes, ask you gp to check. A tiny finger poke would quickly rule it out.

Certainly go if there's a fruity smell on breath, blurry vision and drowsiness.

rosiejaune · 10/04/2020 19:13

Does the squash have orange colouring or sweeteners in it? I used to react to those in a similar way.

Try just water (it's preferable health-wise anyway).

sausagefingersH · 10/04/2020 19:20

My 2 year old has been potty training for the last 3 weeks. She has got the hang of it now but my god she pees a lot! She will probably have around 20/25 wees in a 10 hour period, it's literally every 15/20 minutes that she needs to go.

She does drink a lot though and as soon as her cup is empty she asks for more so I've put it down to that and the fact that she is learning how to hold and when to go so presuming her bladder muscles will gradually get better at holding more volume if that makes sense?

HavelockVetinari · 10/04/2020 19:22

Does he drink water? Diluting juice is fine occasionally but not as a main drink, as the sweeteners can affect the bladder and appetite, and could be making your DS drink more than necessary to get the sweet taste.

If it's sugary juice then that's worse as the effect on teeth and blood sugar is obviously bad too.

Try the GP for a finger prick test.

HavelockVetinari · 10/04/2020 19:26

@sausagefingersH actually that sounds like a lot - how much is she drinking in a day?

Minesbiggerthanyours · 10/04/2020 19:27

My daughter was exactly the same. I used to wonder how someone so small could pee so much. It turns out hers was an overactive bladder.

AmberleighMouse · 10/04/2020 19:30

500ml is more or less a pint. I would estimate he should be drinking around 1.5 litres ish, spread over around 6 drinks.

I think you don't really know until you try toilet training and cut down the juice. It's possible (likely?) that if he's mainly on squash then he is drinking more because he simply likes the taste.

A test for diabetes is a good idea. However bear in mind that a lot of children, especially after toilet training, drink quite a lot less than the recommended amount. Children who have to drink set amounts per day, Eg because of bladder issues, end up drinking a lot more than all their friends. I would try to cut the squash down to no more than 1 drink a day, with a meal, if he is happy to drink water.

Pippapotomus · 10/04/2020 19:30

@sausagefingersH is this a recent constant thirst?

My son was unquenchably thirsty in the lead up to his type 1 diagnosis. (On amazon photos on the 'this day in previous years' that year in every pic of him for a few months prior he had a big sports bottle of water with him.

billy1966 · 10/04/2020 19:50

Great, didn't want to alarm you. You are aware of the diabetes link.

Both of my sons went fully dry overnight from the moment they were trained. They would get up after 12 hours sleep and do a pee that honestly left my husband wide eyed and impressed....and even a bit intimidated😂...several minutes would go on and it was like listening to a horse!

Some children have great bladders...my husband hasn't so I have no idea where it comes from.

It definitely made us laugh first thing...like listening to two old men.

PixiePowered · 10/04/2020 19:52

He will drink anything, water or weak diluting juice.

I genuinely didn't know about the sweeteners and bladder connection. I'll try just water constantly for a few days and see what happens.

OP posts:
sausagefingersH · 10/04/2020 20:15

Well she probably drinks about 2.5litres a day, she will only drink diluting juice at home, usually when she's at nursery they only give water but she wasn't potty training then so I'm not sure how often she weed.

She is drinking more but I put that down to it being warmer and her liking the taste of the juice.

Maybe I should try and cut the juice down to a tiny drop in water and see if she is less thirsty?
