How do I shop with a 17 month old?

Haven't been to the supermarket since lockdown. Running low and want to do a big shop so I don't have to go back. Don't really want to put my son in the trolley seat for obvious reasons and can't navigate with a trolley and a pram at the same time. What's the best way for me to approach this?

In the trolley seat really is the best option. Take cloths soaked in soapy water to wipe it down first if it makes you feel better. And to clean his hands with.

LoisLittsLover · 10/04/2020 14:41

If you have an old blanket can you cut holes in it so the trolley seat is covered blanket but his legs can stil poke through the holes that you cut

Grumpos · 10/04/2020 14:42

A lot of them have someone spraying down the trolleys but I would be tempted to take my own spray and kitchen towel and give the seat a good clean down before getting DC out of car. I’d also be tempted to dress them in their rain suit, you know the all in one suits so they’re covered and you can easily take that off before you get them back into the car.
Hand gel and gloves if you have them.
It’s a pain but you’ve got to eat!

caradelvigna · 10/04/2020 14:42

Genuinely feel nervous that people will judge me...

Judge you for what? You're allowed to shop.

caradelvigna · 10/04/2020 14:45

Potting my son in the trolley seat. My friend was gutted at the other day for taking her 12 year old out. She's autistic which isn't obvious. Just a weird time!

Tutted not gutted

The trolley seat is the best place for him though. Why would anyone bat an eye? Letting him run around is what people would judge you for.

screwcovid19 · 10/04/2020 14:48

A 12 year old is a bit different to a toddler though. An NT 12yo could be left at home while you shop, obviously a toddler can't.

Sirzy · 10/04/2020 14:48

Are you a single parent?

caradelvigna · 10/04/2020 14:48

@sirzy yes I am.

I have a 16mo baby and I put her on my back in a sling to shop.

VladmirsPoutine · 10/04/2020 14:50

I mean this in the kindest way OP but you really need to get a grip. You need to go shopping and that you've started this thread demonstrates that you have no-one to leave your son with. So it's a case of what works best - you've had some excellent solutions to this - get him in a ski suit, bring your own wipes to ensure that the seat/bars are wiped down enough. What more can you do? Both of you need to eat.

birdsbeefriesandeggs · 10/04/2020 14:51

I took my 4 year old out to Morrisons last week and put her in the trolley seat. No one looked or said anything to me. Like pp just wipe it down throughly before putting your child in and wash their hands as soon as you get home or even change clothes if your that bothered.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/04/2020 14:52

Have you got a sling or carrier? On your back would be the best way of limiting his 'touching' potential.

Otherwise- rainsuit and gloves (tied on somehow), cover the handlebar witn something?

Does he still fit in baby car seat? That in the bottom of the trolley may work.

caradelvigna · 10/04/2020 14:52

@vladimirspoutine bit harsh 😅 I was just after ideas on how to be safe about it and an slightly nervous due to single mums getting abuse whilst out and about with their kids. But you're right, not much else I can do. Wish I could use a sling but had my shoulder operated on 10 weeks ago 👎🏾

Going to take my anti bac wipes and put him in a rain suit. Thanks everyone. Just haven't been out to the shops since this whole thing started and am feeling a bit anxious. Good advice 👍🏾

The people tutting are morons. Take your baby to the supermarket if you need to, and don't give it another thought. I was at Waitrose this morning, they were cleaning the trolleys as people returned them, and I saw quite a few people carrying their own packs of wipes. Im sure if you are very concerned, you could easily use your own wipes to wipe down the seat and handle, which would be a good thing.

Please dont deprive yourself and your baby of food just out of worry about other people.

funnylittlefloozie · 10/04/2020 14:55

Btw, its boiling out there. He will MELT in his ski suit.

caradelvigna · 10/04/2020 14:55

@funnylittlefloozie I get anxious going to be shops anyway. It's a long story but Covid has set me back a long way! Am sure it'll be fine.

You wouldn't need to cut- you could shape a blanket or towel around the seat and belt. Although not sure it is needed.

Put winter gloves on the child? Tell them not to touch their face.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/04/2020 15:00

If someone tuts, would you even care?

screwcovid19 · 10/04/2020 15:08

Tell them not to touch their face.

GrinGrin Tell a 17mo not to touch their face

Camomila · 10/04/2020 15:15

If you haven't got a sling/carrier you could maybe make one out of a pashmina/summer scarf? I'm sure there'll be you tube tutorials.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 10/04/2020 15:27

I take it your child has a father? Can he do some shopping for you?
