to think you don't need a face mask in a car?

Just been out for my walk, quiet residential area without many people about. Saw a couple of people out in their cars, just the driver, no passengers. One wearing a blue paper style face mask, the other with a "builder's" style face mask.

On their own, in their cars, with the windows up. Wee bit OTT?

Each to their own I’d say. I wouldn’t judge

Ruby8719 · 10/04/2020 12:40

Who cares?? Sick of these trivial reports about what other people are up to! It’s unhealthy!!

How do you know they just kept them on from visiting somewhere!? Like carers?

YesItsMeIDontCare · 10/04/2020 12:42

Stops them touching a large amount of their face though which must be beneficial.

PineappleDanish · 10/04/2020 12:43

We live round hte corner from sheltered housing and see carers coming and going all the time. None wear face masks in their car - I would assume they don the PPE when going inside and removing before they leave.

Ohhhthepain · 10/04/2020 12:43

You’re not supposed to fiddle with them or keep taking them off and putting them on.

PlywoodPlank · 10/04/2020 12:44

I have thought the same, OP.

StillCounting123 · 10/04/2020 13:01

It's a type of virtue signalling, I think, for some people. Look how well I am observing the RULES, even though it isn't actually a rule to wear a face mask.

ladypete · 10/04/2020 15:41

Perhaps they’d been somewhere, didn’t want to take it off and contaminate their hands and car? Or would make sense to keep it on, untouched, until they were home and could dispose of it safely and wash their hands thoroughly.

I’d do that myself tbh.

ladypete · 10/04/2020 15:42

It* not or.

Freddiefox · 10/04/2020 15:53

Maybe they are delivery drivers and they don’t want to keep taking it off and touching their face

NearlyGranny · 10/04/2020 16:01

I made my own and wore it in the car driving to and from the shops, firstly so I didn't have to don and adjust it in the car park before shopping and secondly so I could take it off correctly at home, dispose of the homemade filter safely and wash my hands immediately. It makes perfect sense to me - it doesn't mean I don't feel safe in the car!

user1494182820 · 10/04/2020 16:02

If you're jumping in and out doing deliveries etc... It's easier to keep it on. Confused

Hingeandbracket · 10/04/2020 16:03

I always feel the same when I see people wearing hats in their cars OP.

Funkytowns · 10/04/2020 16:05

If you’re nipping in and out of your car all day it would be pointless to wear a mask if you’re taking it off and putting it back on repeatedly. Because then you are constantly touching your face. You’re better to leave it on and then take it off when you’re able to wash your hands properly.

Iooselipssinkships · 10/04/2020 16:14

I wore mine earlier in the car but I was on my way to a pharmacy so put it on and took it off at home.
Regardless, if people wanna be cautious even if just in the car then good for them. I'd rather see that than arseholes who aren't following social distancing

Jellycatfox · 10/04/2020 16:22

You are not meant to take them off with dirty hands so my thinking is they are waiting to get home to wash hands properly then take them off.
Who cares though?

PineappleDanish · 10/04/2020 16:26

Definitely not delivery drivers or caters. Very few people here are wearing masks so I noticed the drivers more. I know advice on masks has changed but still - it's really only essential for nurses or people who are currently infections as it stops you coughing.

In your car, on your own, you can't infect anyone or catch it from anyone else. And you're only touching stuff you have touched.

All very odd.

applestrudels · 10/04/2020 16:32

At first I would have said YANBU, but then again, if they're planning on getting in and out of the car a few times (such as going to a couple of different shops, or dropping shopping off at someone's house) it's not good practice to keep taking the mask on and off, as any germs that are on your hand will end up on the mask and once they're on your mask you're more likely to breathe them in.

ladybee28 · 10/04/2020 16:32

No.

Odd would be driving from the passenger seat dressed as Elton John.

Odd would be licking the windows.

Wearing a mask 10 minutes' longer than absolutely necessary in the midst of a global pandemic is not odd.

araiwa · 10/04/2020 16:35

I put mine on when i leave home and only take it off when i get home

Biancadelrioisback · 10/04/2020 16:39

Does it impact you in anyway?

h3av3n · 10/04/2020 17:03

Not sure why it would concern anyone else, if that's what they want to do or what they feel is necessary then I don't see why it would be OTT, they're probably going somewhere and not just staying in their car

Jellycatfox · 10/04/2020 17:45

I know advice on masks has changed but still - it's really only essential for nurses or people who are currently infections as it stops you coughing.
Well.
I haven’t been following the advice here, I have been following the advice other countries were giving for weeks now. So I started my lockdown before it was advised, my social distancing, I do wear a mask and have done for a while. I have not purchased them to leave the stock for workers, but I have made my own.
I wear gloves as I do at work too at times (I am a biologist)
When a mask is used properly and by all, it helps.
I know why I wear mine and I know it helps me.
None of your business as it is not making things worse and I am, if anything, more conservative in my measures than what the government advises. I visit shops every 2/3 weeks

Jellycatfox · 10/04/2020 17:46

It is better to wear your mask in the car until you can wash your hands properly if you don’t have the means.
Simple.

Leaannb · 10/04/2020 17:51

@Ladybee28 I'm just saying there has been several cases of people licking food in grocery stores and being charged for it
