Fit, twenties should be going out to work/help.

Name change incase this is outing.

Myself and my partner live alone, we’re both in our mid twenties and both healthy.

I used to be a community carer (predominantly elderly in their own homes) during uni/finding a grad job and I’ve applied for various hospital/care homes (I was self employed but that’s majority dried up). My partner has also applied for numerous roles as he’s been made redundant. We both have some saving that we could live on for a few months but I feel bad just sitting at home when we could be out there helping.

My partners mum has called him guilting him to stay at home and she’ll top up our basic savings as she says it’s too dangerous to be out there working. My partner has accepted her offer. I feel like a fraud - if every twenty something/key worker/those without vulnerable households were just sitting at home they’d be riots by the end of the weekend.

I'm 29, fit and healthy. I'm also a single parent and obviously have a DC off school so I can't go out and work/volunteer at the moment.

If you're able to and want to then fair enough but it's a bit of a blanket statement.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 10/04/2020 16:11

Yep, go out and spread it all around OP if it makes you feel more “useful”.

Your MIL actually sounds like she cares about your DPs health.

ScorpionQueen · 10/04/2020 16:27

Dh and I are still working but I'm on a very reduced timetable so also deliver prescriptions locally. I couldn't sit at home if I was able to do my bit, but if everyone was out, it wouldn't be lockdown.
You have to find a balance, keep safe, reduce the spread, but somehow still be useful.

Theukisgreatt · 10/04/2020 16:31

I work with about 30 people and only two fit the 20-30 category. Them returning to work would be completely pointless (as would 2 of any other age group)

Really12345 · 10/04/2020 16:32

Everyone must do what their conscious decrees and is right for their health. However it is totally correct that we can’t all sit at home and let someone else do all the work that needs to be done or we will all starve and no one will treat the sick . Morally the lowest risk people have a duty to do front line worm

WorraLiberty · 10/04/2020 16:36

My partner has accepted her offer. I feel like a fraud

Why do you feel like a fraud? Confused

He's the one who'll be staying at home, not you. Unless he's accepted the offer on your behalf? If so, then just decline your personal offer, obviously.

alloutoffucks · 10/04/2020 16:40

@Theukisgreatt We have quite a few younger people in my workplace, but only one does not live with anyone who is vulnerable. I know because people were talking about who they were worried about before lock down happened. Most live with family still. Like one woman who is in early twenties, healthy but her dad has some kind of serious lung condition.

alloutoffucks · 10/04/2020 16:41

We would not open up for the one person who fits this criteria, no point and against our safe working practices.

HeffalumpsCantDance · 10/04/2020 16:41

I’m confused. What has your partner accepting his mum’s offer got to do with you? Go out and get a job if that’s what you want to do, just take all the well-documented precautions.

Theukisgreatt · 10/04/2020 16:43

Yes @alloutoffucks that's a good point.

endofthelinefinally · 10/04/2020 16:46

DS2 is fit and in his 20s. He is working from home and employs 3 people, also working from their homes. He goes out once a day for a run. He certainly isn't the type to riot.

Thanks for the link Orange - v interesting

I think it's brilliant you want to help OP. Lots of care jobs going at present

And I think you'll regret it if you don't. Though personally I'm hoping every day for it to be possible to test people to see if they have had covid and then, yes, all those who haven't had it could stay tucked up safe at home and let people who already have immunity take the frontline jobs.
