Clapping...

Obviously we’re trying to show our support for the amazing work that key workers and the NHS are doing. But on fb I am seeing videos of fireworks going off, pots and pans being banged, horns peeping etc. Luckily I live down a quiet cul-de-sac and so haven’t actually experienced this, but if fireworks sent my dog bonkers or car horns woke my baby up I would be so angry! It’s not showing support when you’re being very inconsiderate to others!

AIBU to think that this it all a bit too much?

I agree, as a one off it was lovely. Not every week.

Squirrelblanket · 09/04/2020 21:48

It was quite noticeable near me that there was less people doing it this week. I agree it was a lovely and heartfelt gesture the first time. It shouldn't be a weekly thing as it just becomes meaningless.

My poor dpuppy.
Alongside sick people we now have terrorised animals to deal with...

PumpkinP · 09/04/2020 21:52

A one off is nice but this weekly thing is just way ott, I have to admit I haven’t clapped at all and won’t be. Earlier they were letting off fireworks here which scared the life out of my 2 year old and I didn’t realise what it was about until I read posts on here because I forgot about the clapping thing. So unnecessary. There was even a lady on my local fb last week slagging off anyone that didn’t clap, when people pointed out some people might be disabled and that’s why they weren’t out clapping she claimed she knew everyone on her street and none were disabled Hmm

Shortfeet · 09/04/2020 21:58

I absolutely love it. I do understand many don't but it is only for a few minutes a week.
I have to listen to all the neighbourhood dogs barking off and on all day every day. Ironically lots of dogs joined in with the 8 pm racket tonight! Grin

Shortfeet · 09/04/2020 21:59

You'll get lots of support here from the mumsnet anti clappers. You are definitely not alone!!

Ciwirocks · 09/04/2020 22:06

I really like it, it’s only once a week and only clapping here. I don’t know about anyone else but I am stressed out going to the shops, these people are coming face to face with this everyday and watching people struggle to survive while fearing for their own lives. They deserve way more than a clap but if it makes people feel appreciated then where is the harm

JasonPollack · 09/04/2020 22:10

Why do it at 8pm though when babies and kids are asleep? Clap at 5 or 6 if you must clap. I think it's self congratulatory bullshit anyway.

Ludo19 · 09/04/2020 22:10

It's a lot of bollocks! Why are we not all out clapping, the HGV drivers, retail staff, vets and staff, funeral directors etc etc! Sorry the NHS workers who do actually care and do actually go to work without being off sick for years (paid) then all respect to you!

Apologies if I haven't mentioned any other key worker or profession!

elQuintoConyo · 09/04/2020 22:11

Once a week? You're bemoaning once a week? Come to Spain, it's a nightly thing at 8 - albeit clapping only, no fireworks or anything. We bang pots and pans to demonstrate anti-war sentiments.

LolaTP · 09/04/2020 22:14

Is one clapping thread not enough?

Why start another

Sackofspuds · 09/04/2020 22:15

Yanbu. Thank the NHS by looking after your health and staying home.

LolaSmiles · 09/04/2020 22:17

YANBU

It feels empty and tokenistic given how many people voted a party in that celebrated denying pay increases for front line health staff and who have been happy to systematically underfund the NHS for years.

I'd be much happier if instead of competing in the gratitude Olympics, with obligatory social media update, people held politicians to account and voted for a properly funded NHS and social care.
