Posted here for traffic rather than the relationship board.
It was shared by Faiza Shaheen (ran against Sir Duncan-Smith), so I'm assuming it's legit.

I know I should have posted on the Relationship board perhaps, but I just wanted more people to see it. I happened to overhear a conversation in a hospital setting between professionals (Monday this week) that domestic violence is going out of control.

From today, people fleeing domestic abuse anywhere in Britain during the coronavirus lockdown can apply for free train travel to refuge accommodation, through a partnership between train companies and Women’s Aid.

Bump

PickAChew · 09/04/2020 23:21

The current challenge is finding a train that is running.

I wish they'd had this when I had no money at all and no idea how I'd get to a refuge. I really hope this is permanent but whilst there's the virus some women don't want to risk public transport. I can't be the only survivor with underlying conditions. I don't know how that can be resolved though. Maybe masks and gloves.

DamnYouAutoCarrot · 09/04/2020 23:57

Thank you for posting this @Balmytissues

Just bumping for anyone who might be up late at night.
Thinking of you all.

And thank you so much to the other posters who have bumped. You never know - it could be just one poster who sees it and makes the difference for them.

@LakieLady - Well done to you and your colleagues. I've had professionals bend the rules for me in different situations and it really made the difference. Isn't it the littlest things that count?

Bump, let's try and keep this in active

MushroomTree · 10/04/2020 11:08

Yes it is legit. I work for a DV charity and a couple of train companies have been doing it for a while.

nzborn · 10/04/2020 11:18

Should be in place before and after Corona

SmallAndFarAway · 10/04/2020 14:39

Bump!

plantlife · 10/04/2020 15:01

How does it help women if nowhere will take them in? Especially women in big cities like London. There's been loads of threads with locals telling people to stay away and keep their "London germs".

MushroomTree · 10/04/2020 15:12

@plantlife refuges are still running as usual, so as long as women met their criteria, they would have somewhere to go.

plantlife · 10/04/2020 15:15

Thank you MushroomTree. The problem is they won't accept someone from.a big city where the virus is really bad. I've seen loads of threads where people are saying keep your London germs away and they go further than just being about the virus. I think most women will be ok I suppose as long as they're not in London or Birmingham.

MushroomTree · 10/04/2020 15:18

@plantlife I work for a DV charity and we wouldn't turn a woman away just because she was coming from London or another big city.

We've majorly increased our hygiene measures so it wouldn't matter to us where she was coming from. We'd consider the risk the same as if she was coming from anywhere else in the country.

plantlife · 10/04/2020 15:18

I saw some countries like France and Spain wete putting women and children leaving in airbnbs and empty holiday homes because obviously refuges fill up quickly and also it helps women be self contained during the virus, but the locals here in the UK would be so angry and nasty about someone bringing their "germs". Anyway sorry for bringing down this thread. Most women should be fine as it's only bad in two or three cities and also hopefully most women will just go and be safe and ignore nasty locals.

plantlife · 10/04/2020 15:20

Posted before I saw your thread. Thank you so much MushroomTree. Thank you for saying that. I'm sorry I'm upset after reading threads where people are being nasty unnecessarily, going beyond it being about the virus and just hating Londoners. It's something I've been scared about for of ages before the virus. Thank you for letting me know it's not all bad people. Thank you.

SnipSnapPop · 10/04/2020 15:26

bump! this amazing!

wish Yasmin from Corrie could see this, lol... actually if they could advertise it after Corrie it would be good

MushroomTree · 10/04/2020 15:29

@plantlife you're welcome. No London haters here! Of course we have our own criteria and we're asking additional questions because of the current situation, but coming from London definitely wouldn't be grounds for rejecting a referral.

pooopypants · 10/04/2020 15:32

This is amazing ❤

plantlife · 10/04/2020 15:33

Thank you so much. I'm in the higher risk group for the virus so there another reason I'm scrared to travel but I have two proper masks and latex gloves for emergency travel and sterilising liquid. Thank you for reassuring me.
