To eat kebabs that are a year old?

Waitinginthewings · 09/04/2020 18:12

Just discovered in my freezer 10 meat kebabs that I'd forgotten about. Will they still be safe to eat? I bought them probably June last year from my butcher. I froze them as soon as I bought them. They were prepared by my butcher. Would they still be safe to eat if I defreeze overnight then grill?

So I decided to call a butcher for clarification, he assured me I was absolutely fine to eat them. Not unsafe whatsoever. Totally safe for toddlers. We have just eaten them. They were delicious! Thanks for everyone's comments. I almost threw them away!

Most things need to be consumed within a few months of freezing

Why? If the freezer is working and they're wrapped property, they'll be fine for years.

Turns out it's safe to eat meat that was frozen a while ago. Provided your freezer has stayed cold all that time, if you had a power cut or left the door open for ages it might be an issue.

Do people not know how freezers work?
As pp said the advice on how long to keep something in a freezer is not because it would go off (obviously. It's in a freezer) but because quality changes.
Meat which has been frozen for a year will have bit different consistency to meat which has been frozen for a week. That's it.

Only thing you have to do is to assure the freezer is a correct temperature and wasn't off longer than what it's manual says is a maximum.

hibbledobble · 11/04/2020 18:59

A quick Google:

"As a general rule of thumb, frozen food will keep for three months in a standard home freezer before starting to show signs of freezer burn. This is true for raw meats, cooked meats, prepared foods, breads, and anything else you might think of freezing."

Regardless, eating kebab is unhealthy and revolting, even more so one that has been languishing for a year in a freezer, this isn't even taking into account the dubious safety of it.

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 11/04/2020 19:00

Glad you ate them. Last week we are chicken that had been in the freezer for over a year with no ill effects. Not the tastiest but perfectly edible and safe

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 11/04/2020 19:00

Eating kebab is certainly not unhealthy and revolting😳 The fuck.
It's meat with marinade on it which has been put on a stick...
Unless of course, the only kebab someone knows is a doner... That says more about them though...
Some people are fucking ridiculous

insideoutsider · 11/04/2020 19:03

I would definitely eat it.
I wouldn't feed it to my toddler though, just because if something did go wrong, even with something else, I'd always think it was the kebab.

Ninkanink · 11/04/2020 19:03

🤣🤣 at kebab being unhealthy & revolting. Please do enlighten us all as to what is to unhealthy and revolting about marinated chicken chunks on skewers. 🙄

And freezer burn doesn’t make the food unsafe.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/04/2020 19:04

Only a year?
fine as long as they're cooked thoroughly

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 11/04/2020 19:10

@Ninkanink or a nice mince with veg, herbs and spices on a stick. Hmmmm. I fancy kebab now!

Btw. I also made homemade "doner". Lush and nothing bad in it. Meat, onion, spices and herbs. Perfect into a salad or a quick lunch wrap!

Ninkanink · 11/04/2020 19:21

I’ll even have a bit of doner kebab here and there. It can be done well.

hibbledobble · 11/04/2020 20:20

I have never eaten a kebab, so no, the I don't know doner kebabs. Meat is very unhealthy, as well as bad for the environment. There is a lot of evidence behind this. But hey, go on eating it, without thinking of the consequences for your health or the environment.

Ninkanink · 11/04/2020 20:24

🙄🙄

rottiemum88 · 11/04/2020 20:24

@hibbledobble not really the point of the thread. Get a grip

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 11/04/2020 20:34

@hibbledobble oh bugger off then. 🙄

BarbaraofSeville · 11/04/2020 20:46

eating kebab is unhealthy and revolting

Yawn. Are you missing the McDonald's threads as an opportunity to show your superiority?

A kebab is just, marinated meat on a stick, often with vegetables, far from unhealthy or revolting.

Even the much maligned doner kebab isn’t that bad, I saw an investigation on a food programme, just seasoned minced lamb.

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/04/2020 20:50

It genuinely never occurred to me that frozen food can "go off" Confused. Like tins... I know they have a best before date stamped on, but really; they last forever, don't they?

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 11/04/2020 21:11

@Thisismytimetoshine it may just not be at its best in terms of flavour and consistency

Re the doner. It should be just lamb and spices, but obviously when buying ot for couple of quid somewhere the quality will be lower. They are catching up onto the ones adding other meat in though. Problem is fat and salt content in there. That said. I still have a chippy doner once every few moths as a treatGrin.

What is wrong with meat on sticks?Confused

Hippee · 11/04/2020 21:29

As long as they are properly cooked, they will be fine. It's mainly the quality that will be affected.

SharonasCorona · 11/04/2020 21:48

@hibbledobble don’t be such a bore

SleepyNightOwl · 12/04/2020 16:53

hibbledobble Did anyone ask you to eat meat? No they didn’t, so fuck off with the whole it’s unhealthy crap, that isn’t true.

juneybean · 12/04/2020 16:54

Once stuff goes in my freezer I forget how old it is. Used some 3 year old pastry today. Was absolutely fine!

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 12/04/2020 17:48

@juneybean you are my type of personGrin

Also. I opened jar of homemade chutney from 2009 yesterday. It's yum.
