Going for a drive

I have seen someone got fined for going for a drive to break the boredom.

I know it's not essential travel but I don't really get why it is banned. As long as you don't get out, there is no risk of infection.

Suppose that would be difficult to police and also small risk of accidents would divert emergency services.

On the other hand, it is low risk and people's mental health is also important.

There's no absolute list of necessary reasons why you can't sit in a car with the engine idling. It is also only enforced under the 2002 act if you refuse to turn your engine off by an authorised person.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 10/04/2020 17:00

But equally the current law (The Health Protection (Coronavirus) Regulations 2020) does not provide an absolute list of “reasonable excuses” for leaving your house. Indeed it cannot be an exhaustive list since it does not include posting a letter as a “reasonable excuse” for leaving your house - and yet the regulation explicitly states that you must be allowed to pay any fine you may incur by post). The sanction if the police decide that my reason for being out is not reasonable is that they can direct me to return to my home or they can escort me there (and they can fine me if I don’t cooperate).

What if everyone went out for a drive then roads would be jam packed that's the simple reason why it's not allowed

RarePackOfLooRoll · 10/04/2020 17:10

And if you're not going to the supermarket because you're vulnerable then run your car idling outside your house.
If you're too vulnerable to shop then why the fuck are you bending the rules.

Rebelwithallthecause · 10/04/2020 17:15

Because some vulnerable people still need to get to hospital appointments and don’t have a driveway to run their car on

Fifthtimelucky · 10/04/2020 18:33

We don't use the cars much at the best of times and my husband has always been a bit paranoid about low batteries.

We bought a mains charger a couple of years ago and have used that a couple of times in the last few weeks, just to be on the safe side.

MsLumley · 10/04/2020 18:45

We got an email from our car manufacturer today advising us to make sure we keep using the car to stop the battery and other electrical equipment in good working order.

MsLumley · 10/04/2020 18:48

To *keep

RarePackOfLooRoll · 10/04/2020 19:00

Rebelwithallthecause No need to split hairs. So if you need your car to get to hospital appointments you don't need to run it because you're still using it.

If your appointments aren't once fortnightly then you can idle your car. The fact you don't have a driveway is NOT an excuse to jusy go for a drive in it. Sit in your car where ever you keep it and run the engine. We only have 1 car on our drive the other is parked down the road. If I leave the engine running in either ar,even the one on my drive, I sit in it whilst I run it because if it gets stolen whilst the engine is running and im not theremy insurance is invalid.

Tbh my cars a banger inlwfy it 5 weeks in an airport car park last year and it still started perfectly ok. Dh works away between 3 and 8 weeks at a tumr and his car also always starts. A few weeks at this time of year isn't going to be massive issue gir most card and idling is more than sufficient if you want to be sure/extra safe.

There is no excuse no matter how hard you try to find one for just going for a drive. You're being an selfish idiot trying to find that loophole.

You need to stay home like the rest of us bored out of our brains whether you.like it or not.

Rebelwithallthecause · 10/04/2020 19:47

Actually I do because my next hospital appointment is in 4 weeks time and I could go into labour at any moment.

With it being our only method of transport to the labour ward I am not risking it not starting

Rebelwithallthecause · 10/04/2020 19:47

But I’d said that previously earlier on in the thread

RarePackOfLooRoll · 10/04/2020 19:49

So you can fit in it and idle it for 30 minutes. You don't need to drive it.

Rebelwithallthecause · 10/04/2020 19:49

Idling is not good for a car with glow plug instead of spark plugs.

And I’ve come back from 2 weeks at an airport to having to jump start a car

Just because it hasn’t happened to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t Hmm

You don’t need to go for a drive. If you’re bored and desperate for a change of scenery take a walk and enjoy the roads being so much quieter!

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 11/04/2020 00:35

So you can fit in it and idle it for 30 minutes. You don't need to drive it.

Pre-covid someone sitting in their car with the engine on for 30 minutes would be worthy of an aibu thread all of it's own. How the times have changed.

Anyway last time we had to have AA out to start our flat battery the guy said to for a drive. He said just letting it idle isnt sufficient and that if we are just going to let it idle we should rev it a bit. Sitting on the drive revving would thrill the neighbours I'm sure.
