Let's get this straight...

You want:

  • the year's NCB
  • it to be insured just in case it's stolen

You don't want:

  • to pay the price for achieving what you do want

YABU. Pay what you owe and cancel or renew depending on the situation in 5 months' time.

Bearnecessity · 09/04/2020 14:42

I am sure I will end up paying it...paying for a service I can't use...how fair.

But your car can still be vandalised/stolen/hit by a turning or drunk driver.

OhNoNoNoNotThatOne · 09/04/2020 14:43

Just call the insurance company, explain the change in circumstances, ask if anything can be done to reduce payments and pay the admin fee...

menthollyinsane · 09/04/2020 14:44

On the plus side, at least you won't be paying for petrol at the moment.

Bearnecessity · 09/04/2020 14:45

Did you read the earlier posts where I said I was happy to pay just not the ridiculous amount being charged presently.

OP posts:
edwinbear · 09/04/2020 14:45

You are getting a service though? That service being, if it's stolen, they will pay out Confused

vanillandhoney · 09/04/2020 14:46

Your son could use the car though. It's not the insurance companies fault that he isn't.

Bearnecessity · 09/04/2020 14:46

This is true Menthol...

Bearnecessity · 09/04/2020 14:48

I live in a low crime area, the car is on a private drive and very unlikely to be stolen. No it is not the insurance companies fault...neither is it mine.

StoorieHoose · 09/04/2020 14:48

You knew it would cost that much when You took out the policy. If your son broke his leg and was unable to drive for 4 months would you think the same ?

edwinbear · 09/04/2020 14:49

Insurance in general is a service we pay for that we hope we never have to use. For example, I have insurance on my home but I really hope it never burns down and I have to claim on it.

lozengeoflove · 09/04/2020 14:50

OP my car was damaged Couple of months ago, by someone in the middle of the night, while we were sleeping. Insurance covered the costly repair job.
You are insurance for many different reasons. Not just for driving your car and so I’m afraid YABU.

Bearnecessity · 09/04/2020 14:51

No my son could not use the car given he isn't going to work or shops and the police are stopping, interrogating and fining drivers for making non-essential trips.

www.insurancebusinessmag.com/uk/news/auto-motor/calls-for-uk-insurers-to-refund-drivers-amid-coronavirus-lockdown-219137.aspx

US insurance companies are part refunding due to having no claims to pay out. They are recalculating their customers premium and refunding the difference for annual policies.

CandleFlames · 09/04/2020 14:53

£85 is cheap. I’m 24 and pay £140.

Hingeandbracket · 09/04/2020 14:55

You must have at least third party insurance, even if the car is just sitting in your driveway
Incorrect.

perniciousdot · 09/04/2020 14:56

Pernicious you have stated the obvious very well, the original question still remains.

There is no question. You don't want to cancel so you will have to pay. It's rather simple.

I did suggest he calls his insurer though..

Bearnecessity · 09/04/2020 14:59

In August DS will be paying it for himself and it will have halved in cost. Leg breaking scenario is a problem from and with my DS which I would suck up. This is an external problem being imposed on us. Your house insurance has been probably been calculated reasonably and fairly and offers you peace of mind as well as fairly good value for money I don't have issues with general insurance products I do object to ripping off young people for car insurance especially when it is going unused.

But he could if he was a key worker or you needed him to do the shopping. He is still able to make essential trips, the lockdown isn’t house arrest.

Bearnecessity · 09/04/2020 15:01

Pernicious the question is in the thread title.

menthollyinsane · 09/04/2020 15:03

Email the insurance company and see what they say.

perniciousdot · 09/04/2020 15:03

Pernicious the question is in the thread title.

You are being far too literal.

There is no question. You don't want to cancel because you want him to have the no claims, so you pay. It's very simple.

Bearnecessity · 09/04/2020 15:04

He is not a key worker nor does he make essential trips. I am starting to wonder how many people are making casual trips out? Paniqer that is interesting thank you.

OP posts:
perniciousdot · 09/04/2020 15:05

Your son is not special. There are thousands of cars not being used. Every single person in that situation has to choose whether to cancel or continue. You don't want to cancel so you have to continue.
