To think that the supermarkets are the bigger profiteerers out there.

I've had to do my first big shop since this properly hit. No offers on anything anymore. I realise that they have had to employ extra staff but that is due to increased sales so wouldn't affect their overall margins. Just venting really as I reckon I'm spending a lot more on basic groceries at the moment.

I realise that they have had to employ extra staff but that is due to increased sales so wouldn't affect their overall margins. A significant p[proportion of the new staff are employed on policing duties - managing the queues outside and making sure people aren't too close inside. There's extra cleaning too. And the overhead costs of interviewing, training new staff, adding them to payroll, buying uniforms for them, for what may amount to only a couple of months employment.

3 for 2 offers are good for the food banks though, I think the food waste issue can be tackled in a better way than removing offers.

They are employing extra people, having to clean far more than usual and likely paying extra for stock.

We are still only having three meals a day so not much of an increase in food bill whatsoever bar no offers. Lunches at home are cheaper than school lunches and no monthly takeaway is another saving.

They could have price gouged and largely didn't. But our grocery expenses have definitely gone up (and it's not because of stopping eating out, we rarely did that!).

Things like paying 3 quid for a kilo of basmati because that's the only brand left on the shelves. Or buying a multipack of tuna and a bag of onions, instead of value tuna and loose onions, because the pack and bag are one item each and the online order had a limit in items. Or buying Pepsi Max not cheaper cola because Food Warehouse would let be buy 8 bottles and Asda would only let me buy three.

All that kind of stuff adds up. We're lucky we have the spare income, I'm sure a lot of families just can't make ends meet now.
