To wash my car parked on the road?

I was told to WFH pretty last minute over 2 weeks ago and then it was lockdown. My car is now covered in muck and bird poo and I'm worried it's going to damage the paintwork.

I don't have parking near my house so the closest I can park is 0.1 miles away, it's on an albeit quiet but public road.

Can I nip out with our portable pressure washer or AIBU?

I don't see any problem with that...use as part of your daily walk?!

Connie222 · 09/04/2020 11:51

Dh was thinking the same thing. We can only park our car under a tree and it’s covered in bird poo. I need to drive to the hospital next week for 20 week scan so we’ll have to do something about the whited out windscreen at least.

Plenty of people park their car on the road and wash it on the road. Wash your car if you want to!

WhateverHappenedToMe · 09/04/2020 12:04

It's illegal to wash you car on the road if the soap suds go down the public drain. If you're only using a pressure washer go ahead - and squirt anyone who tries to come within 2 metres!

Slith · 09/04/2020 12:36

You could put it through a car wash next time you fill up with fuel.

NW2SW · 09/04/2020 12:43

Thanks! I really thought I'd get shot down. We do have one drive through car wash in our city, at the local Sainsbury's but I didn't know if it'd be operational atm

Can people still walk past on the pavement? I went to get a prescription this morning and had to walk in the road with 2 people doing car stuff on the narrow pavement.

bigbluebus · 09/04/2020 13:13

If there are likely to be people waking past then I would say no - you are either going to get them wet or make it difficult for them to pass you as you will be in one place for more than a couple of seconds.

Can't you just take a bucket and sponge and scrub off the worst patches rather than doing a full wash?

My brother got stopped by the police and sent back inside when he tried to wash his car last week

They are all closed around our way. I'll be out tomorrow doing mine on the road, the seagulls have used it as their personal toilet.

I think I'll escape any over zealous Police, they are busy trying to stop people coming in to Cornwall. Good luck with that I'd say.

Summersun77 · 09/04/2020 13:24

@WhateverHappenedToMe How to people come to know about these weird laws?! 😂 I’m sure the police have better things to worry about than soap suds at the moment

Slith · 09/04/2020 13:57

@PhilCornwall1

It must depend on location then, I manage a petrol station and ours is still open.

Useryokyesno · 09/04/2020 13:59

@WhateverHappenedToMe where is the proof of this?

PhilCornwall1 · 09/04/2020 13:59

@Slith ideal. I wish they were here, I'll clean it tomorrow and I can guarantee it'll need doing again a couple of days after. I wish the sodding seagulls would self isolate.

I'd have told the copper to go and f-off.

If he really wanted to fine/arrest me for something, may as well make it worthwhile.

JellyfishandShells · 09/04/2020 14:37

I wiped off the bird poo on my car - parked on the road outside my house. That stuff is so corrosive to paint.

TheDogsMother · 09/04/2020 14:45

Stopped by the police ? Wow. I wonder if some of them are being a bit over zealous with this. Surely it could count as your exercise for the day.
