to think I can learn to dance in my 30s?

I am a festival goer. I'm fairly confident but am absolutely shite at dancing. I've tried just letting go when I'm at gigs etc but I've decided I would really like to dance. I have a 17 month old who loves dancing and music, so figured now would be a good time to follow some YouTube tutorials. What I want to know is... Is it realistic to think that if I stick to this and do an hour a day, could someone who is a bloody awful dancer, actually improve enough to have a bit of confidence? I have good rhythm as I'm a musician. Just don't know how to move my body. I look very wooden. Any tips? Is it one of those things, you either can or you can't?

I learnt to Zumba in my 40s with no dance experience since my teens and now I’m a qualified instructor. It’s definitely possible!

Have you considered partner dancing? Modern jive franchises like Leroc or Ceroc are fabulous. I went to my first lesson at 40 and have never looked back

Oh my goodness... you have to do it.

Life is short. Dancing is great fun. Go for It!

I've also had the stereotype following me around that because I'm black I must be able to dance 😅

Yes you can learn to dance at any age.

notawittyname1954 · 09/04/2020 11:09

You definitely can. And as others said it is fun and makes you happy. Think sounds to me that is is more about feeling self conscious. Just find a piece of music you love and let go. No one better to let go with either than a 17 month old. Just have fun with it.

you absolutely can do it. patience and repetition is key to having the confidence, and the confidence is what makes the 'wooden' go away

I came on to suggest Zumba as well, amazing fun, burns lots of calories and you can do this at home via YouTube. However I miss my zumba class 😭

I fancy doing this as well - any ideas for good videos to use?

Why on Earth not? I’m mid 30s and loving beginners tap (now sadly postponed). Lots of people older than me there too.
