To have noticed the current trend for Dropping One's Gs?

I first noticed Beth Rigby of Sky News forgetting the G at the end of 'ing' words by accenting the N. I found it quite endearing.

I now notice how widespread this new enunciation is and it looks most prevalent amongst London-centric/based people.

Not London-bashing btw nor criticizing, just noticing and reflecting that judgements used to be made if one dropped one's Hs.

YANBU - you've noticed this too
YABU - I've no idea what you're talkin' about.

It's just an accent thing surely. Why does it matter?

UAintMyMuvva · 11/04/2020 10:39

It’s not a ‘trend’. It’s how some Londoners speak. Not hard to comprehend, really.

The3Ls · 11/04/2020 10:49

It's not actually a dropping a g it's a change of sound. The 'ing' is made by lifting the back of the tongue (same place as a k g) and pushing down the front and then making the sound down the nose. They are instead substituting a 'n' which involves lifting the tip of the tongue instead and making it down the nose (same place as a s t z d) it's actually normal development until around 6 years ish. - sorry geeky speech therapist frustrated at not currently being able to treat anyone lol

i can't listen to sadiq khan as he drives me mad doing it.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 11/04/2020 10:58

I'm from Yorkshire and very rarely say the g (or the t) at the end of a word. I drop the h at the start of a word as well and often miss out the the word "the" too. Because of that, I don't notice when others to too.

tulipsrus · 11/04/2020 11:09

Just listened to her and I think it sounds really bizarre

Cybercontroller · 11/04/2020 12:08

I've always done it and so most people where I am in Fife. So not new and not a London thing.

Roomba · 11/04/2020 13:22

Very common in South Yorkshire. I remember my mother telling me off for doing it as a child, she wasn't from S. Yorks and detested it whenever we said something with our classmates' broad accent!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/04/2020 13:28

I'm from the east Midlands and I don't pronounce my Gs.

whathaveijustseen · 11/04/2020 13:37

my local accent where I grew up loses g and the so "runnin down road" and "goin t' shops"- running own the road and going to the shops

Bopalopashamalamadingdong · 11/04/2020 17:03

Priti Patel sounds awful doing it on the news just now
