NHS Death in service payment

Suppermumzy · 08/04/2020 21:15

AIBU to ask you if you know how much would my husband get if I die in service. I have only been qualified a year ( RGN). I know it's sad, I've cried buckets today but it's something am thinking about with the current situation so I know how much my kids will have. Thank you.

Ask your union .

I'm a police officer and in same boat. I've made sure my death in service goes where I want it through our federation.

Daffodil101 · 08/04/2020 21:18

I think it’s a whole year’s pay. Or two years.

Can you google it?

Daffodil101 · 08/04/2020 21:18

(Also three or six months continuing pay)

hibbledobble · 08/04/2020 21:20

I wouldn't rely on it alone, can you afford life insurance?

I'm a junior doctor and we are all writing wills at the moment.

loadypoady · 08/04/2020 21:22

Two years salary for your husband if you are a member of the pension scheme and die in service. Also a widowers pension.

schafernaker · 08/04/2020 21:27

Teachers is 3x your annual wage 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not sure about nurses. Have a look at your pensions page and it should give your death in service pay out too. Sending you hugs at this time. You’ve got this

BelaLug0si · 08/04/2020 21:29

Quick google, first hit for nhs pension death in service gives the section of NHS pension site

Suppermumzy · 08/04/2020 21:30

I think it depends what scheme you are enrolled on

Rupertpenrysmistress · 08/04/2020 21:33

It will tell you on your total rewards statements. Are you able to access that, you should be able to.

workercovid · 08/04/2020 21:35

It's not any different to what you can get on retirement I think. My mum died in service she had been paying for 12 years and my dad got 2 years pay, half her pension as he was retirement age and 3 months wages whilst they sorted it all out.

Suppermumzy · 08/04/2020 21:42

I can access my rewards on ESR but never looked at details. Will have a look as well, I opted in with pension scheme.

I think some emergency provisions have been made for duration of the pandemic. BMA have been campaigning for years (for locums. Not sure if wider). Check their website in first instance?

StealthPolarBear · 08/04/2020 21:55

Half of my brain is struggling to believe what I'm reading and the other half is telling me this is now normal and no big deal.
I'm so sorry huge sections of the population are even worrying about this any more than a brief admin task.

Oldraver · 08/04/2020 22:00

One thing my friend told me when his wife died was that although her salary was apid for a while he had to wait a very very long time for the pension payout which put him under quite a strain

Rono16 · 08/04/2020 22:00

Do you have ESR? it's on there. Mine has my old and new pension listed with payouts ect.

user1511042793 · 08/04/2020 22:02

It’s a years pay plus some from his pension if he’s paying into it.

Griselda1 · 08/04/2020 22:54

For local government it's a gross payment of 3 year's salary. I like how it would pay off any mortgage, car loans etc and still have money left over. I've divided it up among my children and also have additional life cover.

SallyLovesCheese · 08/04/2020 23:34

Life insurance often won't pay out if death is within 1-2 years of starting the policy.

Sorry you're worried, OP. I've been worried about this too - I earn the money and DH is a SAHD so my recent life insurance policy wouldn't cover the mortgage just yet if anything happens to me. Sad

SandyY2K · 08/04/2020 23:47

You should really be asking your HR department this question.

GabsAlot · 09/04/2020 19:52

Insurance wouldnt pay out if yu get it now and die of corona

IncyWincy23 · 09/04/2020 21:14

Thinking of you during these worrying times.
I’m pretty sure that it’s either a years pay or your pension (whichever is most). So for one year qualified it’s probably your yearly income. Is there anywhere that your trust has organised for you to speak about your concerns? I had a massive wobble last week and felt much better for speaking to someone x

Healthyandhappy · 09/04/2020 21:33

Life insurance is 12 quid per month well ours is for 2 of us and covered for 200k. Death in service double wage ish

myboysmum · 10/04/2020 23:09

I work for the council and ours is 3 years of pay. I'm in the shielding category and contacted them last week to make sure they had my up to date wishes in the event of my death in service.

Gardenischeaperthantherapy · 10/04/2020 23:17

If you’re in the NHS it’s almost three times your salary, ive recently organised this for my family...make sure you sign and send off the nomination forms... www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/member-hub/nominations
