To be annoyed with this neighbour?

AIBU to be cross with the people in the nextdoor flat to me? The situation is we live close by the new Nightingale hospital and the flat next door is an Air BnB. Thankfully it has been empty most of this year, but this week two people moved in. I don't know who they are but I am wondering if they could be NHS workers due to the locality, if Air Bnb's have been asked to let out to NHS staff perhaps? They may not be, and it may be the actual owners who have returned, or someone connected with the owners as I'm assuming it wouldn't be a "normal" Air Bnb tenant at this time. However I suspected NHS since they only moved in this week and the hospital has just opened. All the local hotels are being used for nurses etc.

Anyway they have been smoking strong skunk, really horrible stinking weed. I can see them smoking it so I know it is them. (They are also playing loudish music though that's less of a concern). I fking hate the smell of skunk and it is drifting into our flat all day - it is in escapable unless we close all our windows. We have an adjoining balcony and with the lovely weather our balcony door has been open all day understandably. Also I am pregnant so there's an additional reason I don't wish to be breathing it in.

Is it reasonable to be cross about this? Or should I lighten up under the current circumstances. If I'm right to be annoyed, then is there anything I can do?

Just call the police!
I very much doubt they are on mumsnet 🤷‍♀️

mbosnz · 08/04/2020 19:21

Well, I don't think you're being unreasonable, that's pretty anti-social, especially in the current circumstances, what with a global pandemic of a respiratory illness and all.

I don't know what you could do, though. Ask them politely, maybe via note, to close all doors and windows because not everyone wants to breathe in their smoke, especially their pregnant one, and if they're NHS workers, then they should be able to appreciate this?

Concerned12345 · 08/04/2020 19:30

Erm police like any other person would? It's ILLEGAL...Hmm

CabbagePatches · 08/04/2020 19:31

Do you think it's reasonable to report to place at the moment though? As in, don't they have bigger things to deal with?

Why don’t you try contacting the air b’n’b owners with your concerns first? I imagine they don’t want their place stinking if skunk and might even have a none smoking clause. Even if they are NHS workers, the owner will still want the place respected.

Newbie1999 · 08/04/2020 19:37

Have to say, I wouldn’t phone the police first off. I’d just ask them to stop and take it from there.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 08/04/2020 19:42

I have had this for 6 months from cuntish tenants downstairs. The police, council and the landlord give zero fucks. We are putting our flat on the market as soon as lockdown is over. I hope you have better luck than us as it is just soul destroying having to put up with it 24/7.

Biancadelrioisback · 08/04/2020 19:48

I'd be speaking to them first. Well...a note under the door or knock and stand 2m away. Just explain that the smell is very strong in the flat and the music is too loud. If that doesn't work, you can then report them, but at least youve tried

Thatbloodybear · 08/04/2020 21:30

Does anyone seriously think the police are going to be interested in some adults having a puff in their own home?
Just post. A note through saying the smell of their skunk is making you feel sick as you're pg, and would they mind not. If they persist call Air BnB.

HelgaHufflepuff76 · 08/04/2020 21:41

I'm a bit shocked that some people would call the police on them. Especially if you think they work for the NHS.
Just put a note under their door.

SewItGoes · 08/04/2020 22:36

Hmm I wouldn't care who they work for, to be honest. Weed isn't necessary to doing NHS work, believe it or not.

A note under the door might help, but the kind of person who isn't worried about bothering neighbours with loud music may not care that those same neighbours are also sick of smelling their smoke.

I'd contact the Air BnB owners, if possible, and if that doesn't help, then the police.

Concerned12345 · 08/04/2020 22:37

It's reasonable to report OP yes.

Concerned12345 · 08/04/2020 22:37

I'd also report to Air BnB

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 08/04/2020 22:39

What has this got to do with them possibly being NHS workers. TLDR: your neighbours are smoking Skunk. Nothing else was relevant. No you’re not unreasonable but what can you really do?

Reginabambina · 08/04/2020 22:40

@HelgaHufflepuff76 surely if they’re working in healthcare that’s more of a reason to report them to someone. It’s skunk, not regular weed.

@OP your best bet would be the flat owner. I doubt they want their nice flat being ruined by skunk smoke.

UnrulySalvia · 08/04/2020 22:42

I don't think you're being unreasonable but I'd go with a note through the door in the first instance.

AddressLabel · 08/04/2020 23:09

Round here the police are actually going to holiday lets/AirBnB/2nd homes and sending people home. The locals report them. So just call the police, tell them that you think holiday makers/second home owner has moved n and that they are also smoking skunk and see what happens.

HelgaHufflepuff76 · 10/04/2020 11:53

All weed is what people call "skunk" these days. It's what it's evolved to.
If they like to smoke weed (I don't, but each to their own) then maybe they have earned it after a hard shift! If it bothers you then send them a note, don't involve the police for gods sake!
