What to do about neighbour with a fire filling the whole street with smoke?

My NDN has a fire in his garden. There’s smoke belching out like nobody’s business. You can hardly see the other side of our small residential street through it. I can’t open my windows because the smoke absolutely stinks and it engulfs the flat. I can smell it strongly with the window shut, it’s catching the back of my throat and making me cough.

I’ve asked him to put it out and he said he would but as yet he hasn’t, we can see him from my window.

Who do I call about this, the police, the fire service? He’s taking the absolute piss.

Is it within hosing distance ?

Are you in a smoke control area? I didn't think bonfires were illegal I'm afraid

BlackCatSleeping · 08/04/2020 17:00

If it’s covering the road, then it’s very dangerous.

Check your local council and fire brigade sites. We've had calls not to burn stuff. You may find a helpful number

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 08/04/2020 17:01

Yeah you need to check your local council website as the bylaws around bonfires differ greatly.

If he's acting within the law then you'll just have to wait til he's finished.

Nothing. We had a neighbour who dismantled a house and burned the contents (wood, flooring, furniture, felt, everything except the bricks and the glass)daily in his garden for over a year. We called the fire brigade a couple of times when it was big and unattended, but the council don’t care (filled in several ‘activity’ forms). One had a constant fire ie 24/7 for over a month. They did nothing. We involved a solicitor. He was supposed to have a permit, which he did eventually get, but he broke all the rules. Shut your windows, bring your washing in and count to 10.

If it’s covering the road with smoke then you should call 101 and let them know. It is illegal to let bonfire smoke cover a road.

Can you video it on your phone, and report it to the council (environmental health) in the morning? They should fire off a warning letter that will at least put him off doing it again.

Some councils have an out of hours service for environmental health, but I think your chances of them regarding this as an emergency are slim to zero.

If the smoke is drifting across a main road, you could try the fire brigade and/or police on the basis that it's a danger to traffic becaused of poor visibility.

He’s put it out now thank god. He seemed most put out when I asked him to, as if people wouldn’t notice a fire billowing out a giant mushroom cloud of smoke. Stupid bugger.

There does seem to be lots of burning going on atm. I assume people are burning garden rubbish as the council have stopped picking up. The whole place stinks.

The councils need to ban bonfires and/or reopen household tips. Preferably both.
