To put savings for a deposit on hold and go on holiday after this?

I’m an NHS nurse (a&e so frontline of frontline). I am absolutely exhausted with all things Covid. Regularly crying after/at work, tired of the mortalities, the PPE, constant changes in the department. I’m also saving for a house and currently live at home. I have £6K in savings right now and hope to have £7K by June... who knows how long the lockdown could go on for!

I don’t want to withdraw money from my savings but Aibu to put saving for a house on hold and save £1.5K for a nice holiday when Covid is over? I feel like this £1.5K is wasting time/money that could be closer to buying a house but equally I want to enjoy life! I last went on holiday in February on a cheap and cheerful Canary Islands trip but this time I fancy something more luxurious and further afield. Aibu?

Go on holiday god knows you deserve one my love you are young and have the rest of your life to save ❤️

I say that after all this is over with you will deserve a holiday.

However I am very weary about travel now.

Lipstickandlashes · 08/04/2020 09:29

Do it. You can continue saving afterwards, have a secure job and (sadly) the housing market is in for a shock, so you may be able to buy cheaper and sooner, assuming banks are still lending. You deserve the break. And thank you.

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/04/2020 09:33

I would say holiday too or just something nice as a treat if holidays abroad are off the cards for a while longer

House prices may drop, mortgages may be harder to get, so if I was planning on buying for the first time I’d extend the timescale I was initially planning for anyway and taking some of the pressure off

Tiredmum100 · 08/04/2020 09:34

Nurse to nurse, do it. I bought my first house when I qualified at 22, I've never really had any savings as have always paid mortgage/bills. I'm 36 now with dc so it's more expensive to go away, so I spend most if my time dreaming of the holidays I'd like to go on! I wish I'd gone on more holidays. You will certainly need a lovely holiday after this. Thank you for all you are doing.

Charlotteli · 08/04/2020 09:34

YANBU, you are more than earning that holiday! Treat yourself! Life is too short

Go on holiday. You'll still have what you've saved, which is great, and it's three months of savings :staying an extra three months with your folks so you can have sometime away to recharge in best way fir you after all this is vital self care. Thank you for what you're doing

Katkincake · 08/04/2020 09:40

Holiday definitely - I’d echo @Tiredmum100 about having a few great holidays before you’re trapped by mortgage payments. As someone who deals with emergency response of a different kind, the need to have a complete break away from a drawn out period of intense stress is really valuable for my mental health & recovery afterwards.
Thank you for what you’re doing - you definitely deserve some luxury afterwards

DeanHardscrabble · 08/04/2020 10:30

Go the fuck on holiday!

ilikebooksandplants · 08/04/2020 10:35

Go on holiday!

ConstantlySeekingHappiness · 08/04/2020 11:05

Holiday!!!!!

You deserve it. There’s plenty time for a house purchase.

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 08/04/2020 11:14

I agree with @Tiredmum100 though I’m not a nurse. I brought my flat at 23, I’m now 35, DH, 2 kids and no decent holidays! I wish I had maybe had a few more years of wonderful holidays before I got tied down with a mortgage. Definitely have the holiday Smile

CaptainCarp · 08/04/2020 12:06

Agreeing with everyone else.
Definitely go on a holiday or at least treat yourself to something luxurious that you wouldn't normally.
I went travelling for 3 months in my early 20s. If I hadn't I'd have easily got a 10% deposit for a house but I would do the same if I could go back!

Redcrayons · 08/04/2020 12:08

If anyone deserves a holiday, then it’s you. Do it.

coconuttelegraph · 08/04/2020 12:12

You really don't need to ask permission, do what will make you happiest. I'm sure you're sensible enough to have thought about all the consequences.

I'm not a healthcare worker but am planning to splurge on a holiday as soon as we're allowed to.

altiara · 08/04/2020 12:17

Holiday!! You’re not touching your current savings so that’s good.

alwaysthinkingofsleep · 08/04/2020 12:29

Why not go travelling?? Once the current crisis eases & it’s safe to visit a few places? 24 is v v young to buy & be burdened with such finances. Have a proper break & enjoy spending time with yourself x

BarbaraofSeville · 08/04/2020 12:40

You definitely deserve a holiday and you're in a good position to save a healthy deposit while living at home on a nurse's salary, which while it's far from mega bucks, you should be able to save a fair bit each month especially as many of the things many people spend their money on aren't available at the moment.

It's also a good thing to not rush into buying a house right now as prices could drop due to the economic fall out of Covid-19. You could save far more than the cost of a holiday by waiting a few months/year or two to buy a house. You have an advantage over many of having a secure income. Have you signed up to the help for first time buyers - whichever ISA it is now where the government tops your savings up?

SharonasCorona · 08/04/2020 12:43

Go for it! We spent £4.5k for 2 on 2 weeks in Maldives a few years ago.

My frugal heart thudded at forking out that much for a holiday (although I know people can easily spend each on a £10k holiday to the Maldives).

But actually that money was well spent as it was such a completely different experience. I truly do treasure the memories as I am unlikely to ever go back.

And now the same holiday costs £8k for 2!

Mandraki · 08/04/2020 13:56

Absolutely go! You deserve it. You'll have the rest of your life to save and then to pay a mortgage. Go and relax, when you can.
