To take my SEN child to the beach?

coronaandtired · 07/04/2020 18:30

DS is 7 and autistic and we live ten minutes from the beach. He is struggling greatly with being made to stay at home and is used to going out to the beach park etc every day. He also has sensory needs and obviously the beach provides a lot of input.

I'm not sure what the guidance is for SEN kids or if they are exempt from the 'only go out for exercise or to buy meds/food' rule. I wouldn't take DS unless I knew they were exempt, so don't think I'm going to just load him into my car and drive down there!

Just wondering if anyone has heard of a relaxation of the rules in this regard?

I thouggt a 10min drive ti the beach wasnt allowed. Here they've closed car parks for that reason and police have been checking those stopping on the roads.

Its the rather lucky (well off!?) People who live near beaches and foresta who get to walk in them. But the reasoning is you could have an accident in the car and they really dont want people travelling out thwir area.

homesweetbristol · 07/04/2020 18:49

Where are you? There are exceptions in Spain, for example. They wear a bracelet and are allowed to go out more freely.

LolaSmiles · 07/04/2020 18:51

Elpheba
I'm upset and missing going to the beach at the weekend because our dogs love it.
I'm quite envious of friends who live within walking distance of the beach.

There is no law about an hour, or about 1'mile. It is not in the legislation. The law is that you.are allowed out for exercise, there is no legal time. The Guidance is not the same as the law. Legally you can go out for food, medicine, exercise and to escape harm or support a vulnerable person who lives elsewhere. If you choose to go to the pharmacy every day or the food shop on a walk that isnt illegal, just not adviised. So take your son to beach. Between 9 and 10 is usually quieter time.
We are going to be in lockdown for a long time yet. Do you.want OPs so to struggle so much that she is forced to get help from outside agencies? There has to be some balance in this.

reefedsail · 07/04/2020 18:52

If it's a 10 minute walk you can go, if it's a 10 minute drive you can't.

daisypond · 07/04/2020 18:52

doesn't matter op is only ten minutes from the beach....no,and NO exemptions
Matt Hancock said a short drive to do your exercise was fine.

mummymayhem18 · 07/04/2020 18:52

Come on think logically. Yes I can imagine it's very hard having a child with SEN during this but of course there aren't exemptions for them. Coronavirus doesn't have exemptions, anyone can get it and anyone can pass it on.

Sennetti · 07/04/2020 18:53

@nettleskeins by that way of thinking we can all go then!!

I hope this is helpful. It's up to you decide if it's truly essential.

WorraLiberty · 07/04/2020 18:55

If you live locally to the beach then you can take your exercise there.

Why are you looking for exemptions? Exempt from what?

Snowdrop30 · 07/04/2020 18:55

Hi there, I also have a SEN child with sensory seeking needs. I'm finding my DS is getting a lot of comfort from a yoga/exercise ball, a big stretchy band and a hand massager. He's also back on his chew toys. Might any of these be of use to you?

roughtyping · 07/04/2020 18:55

@bagelsandbrie great minds

Nettleskeins · 07/04/2020 18:56

Im.sorry, there are people.driving 7 min to our local park every day to walk their dogs. It is not illegal!!! The alternative is that they walk on a crowded pavement with on lead dogs for two hours. It is reasonable for them to drive locally for exercise cos the alternative is lose lose for all the people they bump into. Fgs

Nettleskeins · 07/04/2020 19:00

Roughtyping, brilliant link and post. EXACTLY. The stasi enforcers on here are extraordinary. It is not illegal to drive to take exercise, if there is.a reasonable basis for.this.

Sirzy · 07/04/2020 19:00

Be careful though because you may find the beach is busy with people with the same idea.

Having an autistic child who is on the shielded list I get how hard it is. If you can get there easily and walk and it’s not too busy then go for it. If your plan is to go there for a day out or play then don’t

Sennetti · 07/04/2020 19:01

this is why there is so many people calling for further lockdown

the message is STAY AT HOME

WeMarchOn · 07/04/2020 19:04

Could you buy some sand for the garden so he can have sensory feedback

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 07/04/2020 19:04

The rules are the same for everyone! The rules are there to try and prevent as many deaths as possible so nobody gets an exemption I’m afraid.

You can go out and exercise once a day.

So you can go to the beach and walk/run but what you can’t do while there is meet others you don’t live with, sun bathe, have a picnic etc

Selfsettling3 · 07/04/2020 19:04

I went to the beach today with my 3 year old, it less than a 10 min walk and we only have a very small yard. Luckily she is very aware to keep a distance from people because there were a lot of adults who weren’t.

YangShanPo · 07/04/2020 19:08

They have also made some exemptions for autistic people in France.

Sennetti · 07/04/2020 19:10

1,417 deaths today in France @yangShanPo

highest in all the countries worldwide

gamerchick · 07/04/2020 19:13

I'm not sure why you're looking for exemptions though OP. Do you think this virus will give you a wink and a swerve?

What you're saying is, you think it's a perfectly acceptable risk for your kid to catch this lung attacking virus and be extremely poorly. Trying to find a way around the guidelines doesn't mean anything.

Police here are fining people who park on the coast.

dottiedodah · 07/04/2020 19:13

We live on the South Coast ,and the Police are patrolling along the Prom ATM .An elderly chap was moved along by them today(shown on Southern news ) The actual beach is deserted .I think they are worried that if one or two people are there it will encourage others as well! We live a 10 min drive away and have not been since this crisis began .

user1493494961 · 07/04/2020 19:15

We live near to a beach, police officers have been patrolling there and asking people to leave.
