Drinking and eating during lockdown

Wondering if anyone else is drinking and eating much more (daily for me) than usual in view of the current state of things? I’m not usually a big drinker or someone to binge on junk food but at the moment I feel as though eating crap and having a few drinks at the end of the day (well, afternoon Blush) is one of the only things I have to keep me going. The news is utterly depressing, I’m bored of being stuck indoors and as someone who is used to socialising regularly and travelling a lot for work, alcohol and food are serving as a welcome distraction from all this madness at the moment. In an attempt to make myself feel less guilty about the state of my waistline and liver...Please tell me I’m not alone?! Shock

Carby twattery how long till someone nabs that as a user name ?

Only a fool would do that.

GGMons · 07/04/2020 16:59

Thanks everyone, nice to know I’m not alone at least Grin

It's not really a case of BU or NBU though.

I've actually found the opposite.
I'm snacking a lot less.
I'm not able to 'pop out for a meal as none of us want to cook'
I'm not able to stop off at a cafe because I've got an hour to kll between visits.
If I don't buy chocolate / biscuits with the weekly shop, then I can't 'nip out and get some'.

I'm also exercising every day, around work, as I no longer have other commitments in the evenings.

Am seriously hoping I might shift a few pounds in this time, if nothing else.

CookPassBabtridge · 07/04/2020 17:03

As a lifelong binge eater, I'm actually being good! I could so use this opportunity to stuff my face knowing I don't have to leave the house and face people, but I don't want to use our supplies and have to order more food. I can binge a few days worth of food in a few hours and I'd feel so guilty. Also I keep reading about covid patients dying due to obesity as the lungs are under more strain, so that's keeping me on the straight and narrow.

WickedlyPetite · 07/04/2020 17:04

A 4pm vodka and tonic has become a thing in our house now.

daisypond · 07/04/2020 17:09

I’m eating much less! We’ve got to feed more people on less money and the shops are empty of lots of foodstuffs. We are eating lots of fruit and veg, which are readily available. Also, fewer trips to the shop. No top-up shops where you might buy chocolate while you’re there. No alcohol, because it’s too heavy to carry in the weekly shop. We don’t have a car.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 17:20

It's that "can't just pop into the asda for bits I just fancy", isn't it?
I am actually loving it tbh.

Straycatstrut · 07/04/2020 17:25

I'm up half a stone so far and it's driving me insane. I got through 3 bottles of 14% wine the first week of lockdown. I'm a single mum of two boys who need constant stimulation and supervision, and I can't do the exercise I'm used to (walking a very long school run, long dog walks, lane swimming). I've tried home exercising when they're in bed but I am KNACKERED and not feeling it at all. I don't like copying instructors... I'm just used to doing my own thing.

The boys are constantly hungry ("can I have a snaaaaack?") so both sets of GPs have decided to start with regular food hampers.. which is LOVELY but there's so much junk in them ("because they think we deserve some treats") -- and I feel like I can't say anything! In fact it's mainly junk. The last one was caramel chocolates, red wine, 2 packs of biscuits and jam. I am just snacking constantly, and the kids nag for it. I'm (very hopefully) starting an access course this September and I don't want to start a massive ugly, self-conscious lump! Easter is coming so I've been told to expect huge chocolate hampers. I've actually chucked multipacks of heros mini chocolate bars in the bin before....I feel like it is just utter rubbish, stuffed with gooey, awful surgery stuff. I can't stand to eat it. Then I get the guilt of that, throwing away food, throwing away gifts....

I've since bought myself some apple & pear gin, diet lemonade and I've frozen grapes, raspberries and strawberries to go in it. I don't snack on the gin as much as I do on the wine! next shop my parents do with my own list will have no rubbish in it.

I'm going to hit the pool so hard when this is over. May do some machines too. The main thing is we come out of it alive though. Weight gain can be fought and conquered easily compared to those battling CV.

Wakeupsunshine · 07/04/2020 17:28

I’m eating much less and have lost half a stone that I’ve been carrying for five years. I have no inspiration to cook and obviously not shopping as much.

Cakemadeoffruit · 07/04/2020 17:29

I clicked YABU by accident. But then I am on my third glass of wine.

Verily1 · 07/04/2020 17:29

I am eating more- I think it’s boredom and access to the crisps/ biscuits/ chocolate I bought in. (Normally don’t keep junk food at home)

stophuggingme · 07/04/2020 17:31

Too much tea
Too much homemade cake
Too many crisps
Too many big dinners
Too much Sauvignon Blanc

And definitely too much gin

Chrisinthemorning · 07/04/2020 17:34

I was doing slimming world for cancelled holidays so have stopped that.
I am eating healthily with lots of fruit and veg. I have added daily alcohol and chocolate/ cake/ biscuit in to my diet though.
I am exercising more- I do Joe Wicks alongside DS followed by half an hour of Pilates. I used to do 1 hour Pilates a week but we’re probably doing that 3x a week and walking a couple of miles in the country (we live in a small village on the edge of countryside and moorlands) on the other days.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 07/04/2020 17:34

No, I've dropped to one or two meals a day on the days when I've been really inactive. Dont need the fuel at the moment.

My eyeballs are floating with all the tea I've been drinking though!

BogRollBOGOF · 07/04/2020 17:35

I think I'm going to gain. I'm keeping up decent amounts of running, but I've lost all that background movement that stacks up, 2/3/4 school runs per day, a walk to the community centre, nipping out to catch pokemon. I'm doing yoga most days, but that barely blips on my watch for direct energy burn. Currently on 12% for the day Confused

Meanwhile the ravenous DCs are home along with DH so it's either use half a loaf for sandwiches and then the DCs keep picking or just cook another meal to fill everyone properly. We are eating well, and healthier than before. I hope that the loss of sneaky McDonalds at the weekends is an offset.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 07/04/2020 17:38

I know this won't be popular but alcohol does not do the immune system any good.

In case anyone didn't know and wants to cut down.

Womenwotlunch · 07/04/2020 17:41

The first week and a half, I ate a lot. However for the last week or so, I have been careful.
I walk for 45 minutes three times a week. The other days , I do my Insanity or Tae bo workouts. I have reduced the amount of food because I don’t want to come out of lockdown two stone heavier

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 07/04/2020 17:41

Here's some articles about alcohol and immune system, 2nd one is an easier read

Here's more

That is, by drinking too much, you decrease your body's defensive mechanisms to fight off a cold, virus, or other bacterial or viral infections.
And it's not just that you're more likely to get a cold — excessive drinking is linked to pneumonia and other pulmonary diseases. It can also lead to a wide range of health problems, including high blood pressure and heart disease, liver disease, and increased risk of cancer.

I'll piss Off now Smile

Isawamagpie · 07/04/2020 17:49

I cannot believe how much I need to social distance from the fridge.
I am absolutely eating and drinking way more than I ever have, found out the scales today and I've put on almost a stone and finding it hard to exercise it off since my bit of exercise is walking my dogs, since they need to exercise too. Usually I would be going to the gym and generally being much more active.
Its really getting me down as I was becoming over weight anyway, and was just getting it back under control.

Would love to know how everyone else is dealing with fighting the urge to eat and drink through everything!

Fluffybutter · 07/04/2020 17:51

I’m eating less but drinking more .
By drinking more I mean a glass of wine /beer every other night maybe as opposed to just a Friday or Saturday

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/04/2020 17:56

We're treating it like a warmer xmas, minus the tree and boring visits Grin

JohnFinlaysNewTeeth · 07/04/2020 18:01

Eating, not really and I'm a fatty. Drinking yes. We never drink at home despite having a well stocked drinks cabinet but I've had a few glasses of gin and some ciders, especially on the nice evenings the in the garden. We do smoke weed but have ran out so that's probably why the alcohol consumption has gone up!

misskatamari · 07/04/2020 18:02

I've not had a drink since lockdown started, as have been feeling a bit rough, but i have been baking and eating waaaay too much. It's definitely a stress reaction. Trying to up my fruit and veggies to at least compensate a bit and make sure i'm eating healthy, nutrient filled meals
