Calling police about neighbors

WIBU to call the police non emergency number to "report" my ndn for smoking weed in their back garden, and if I do call them will they do anything?

They have done it for years and in normal life I just ignore and don't use the garden much. Obviously things are different at the moment and I can't just pop to the park to enjoy the nice weather.

We have lived here 4 years and are hoping to move to a nicer area in the summer.

I frankly don't care about other peoples recreational drug use but it stinks, and we can't use the garden much without breathing in the smell and it clinging to clothes and washing.

For full picture I am 6 months pregnant and WFH, DH is a key worker out 8-5:30 NDN smokes weed in their garden 3-4 times a day and the smell is basically permanent. You can't smell it inside our house though.

You could suggest vaping ? Better for them (and you) in any regards.

I don’t think the police have any power to act unless there is evidence that he is dealing.

Possession of cannabis is a criminal offence that can carry a sentence of up to 5 years in prison. The police have the power to search persons and premises they have reasonable suspicion of committing an offence.

@Widowodiw yes I am aware there is a lot going on at the moment. Which is why I would like to be able to use my garden without weed stink.

@DdraigGoch I didn't think of this I've just had a look and they have an online form I can fill in.

I think the only thing you can do is to politely ask if they can smoke a little further away as you’re pregnant and the smell is very strong for you and making you feel sick.
Do it best way you can to not put them on the defensive/attack. Google the best way to confront neighbours.

hardyloveit · 07/04/2020 18:45

Are you sure it's defiantly your ndn- I only say this as I thought my ndn was smoking it (I'm not too fussed on the smell tho) and when I was speaking to them it's actually their neighbour on the other side that smokes.

MorganKitten · 07/04/2020 19:00

It’s not a communal area - even if it bothers you - so they won’t do anything.

treenu · 07/04/2020 19:10

In normal times I would say go for it - we had a similar issue and cited anti-social behaviour. It was coming into our dc's bedroom and couldn't escape it.

It took a couple of weeks of letting them know the pattern, but they did come and it did stop. Right now though they are probably stretched.

HairsprayBabe · 07/04/2020 20:48

Yes definitely NDN we have 3/4 height fences with trellis at the top so you can see them clearly.

I am not going to speak directly to them as they are regularly rowing/shouting/fighting and generally not particularly pleasant neighbors.

I have filed a report online with our local police and I will continue to do so. Our local police website encourages you to report any illegal drug use so I am following that.

Thanks for all your help.

There are sometimes smells that you dont like... oh well... Also the smell of weed smoke does not permanently absorb into the air and grass etc, I doubt you can constantly smell it in your garden.

HairsprayBabe · 08/04/2020 09:01

How can that be true when up-thread people have said weed smell can sleep through walls and make houses stink constantly.

I'm genuinely shocked that mumsnet are literally saying tough suck it up to antisocial drug use when a post about people using radios in their own gardens was unanimously YANBU...

The mind boggles 😂🤦‍♀️

Smoke indoors is very different to smoke outdoors. If you genuinely believe your grass and surrounding air is absorbing the smell of weed smoke permanently then you must be imagining things... It isn't somehow wrong for someone to smoke weed and you most likely have an issue with the fact it's cannabis, if it wasn't illegal I wonder if you'd be so pissed off about it. There are sometimes smells you don't like eg barbeques, bonfires, tobacco smoke, cooking etc but most people just deal with it.

Whatsmyname26 · 08/04/2020 11:00

I doubt they will do anything. Worth remembering though that weed isn’t reserved for the poor - you could move to a ‘nicer’ area and have exactly the same issue
