To ask for book recommendations..?

New to Mumsnet, sorry if this isn’t the right section.

I’m after some book recommendations, ideally fiction. I want to order a bundle of books for my 80 year old grandmother. She’s a game old bird, very sharp and young for her age. Loves browsing Instagram and looking at celeb gossip. Loves a laugh and is a huge part of our family. I hope I am just as she is when I’m her age. She loves a good read, so I’m after some recommendations.

Ideally young ish fiction (she’s not one of those ‘it was better in my day’ types, not that there’s anything wrong with that). If it’s a bit rude in parts, that’s fine too 😂. Just trying to paint a picture.

Ultimately she’s missing her family but keeping v chipper and is very happy receiving her daily WhatsApp videos of the grandkids. I’d be so grateful for any recommendations... thanks

I would recommend looking at books by Sarah Morgan and Jill Mansell.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Daisy Jones and the Six.

Both based around celeb lifestyles.

Apparently some of the newest MarianKeyes books are less fluffy than her earlier work. I've not read them but what you said about your Gran made me think she might like her books.

Definitely get her started on Terry Pratchett. Look for the witch series for starters
The Witches (see also Tiffany Aching):
Equal Rites
Wyrd Sisters
Witches Abroad
Lords and Ladies
Maskerade
Carpe Jugulum

from what you've said, she will love them - and will want to read the other themed ones too, which should keep her going for a few years.

I think Milly Johnson is funny - chick lit, but with a good Barnsley sense of humour.

MulberryPeony · 07/04/2020 07:49

Ben Elton for some laughs.

Anything by Jane Fallon
Pilgrimage of Harold fry
Behind the scenes at the museum
