To think the ITV drama Quiz looks cringe?

I remember the real life event and I keep seeing the advert for it.

Chris Tarrant, Charles Ingram and his wife look like caricatures of themselves.

Well it's based on a successful west end play by a fantastic playwright

Who wants to be a millionaire drama is a west end play?

Also wow some people need to calm down ffs.

All I’ve seen is the trailer/advert .. it could be good. The editing gives it the impression of looking like a comedy. That’s all I said.

Quiz was originally a West End play (nominated for the Olivier for Best Comedy Play), the playwright also wrote the TV adaptation.

Presumably it was filmed long before Coronavirus. Weird timing though.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 06/04/2020 22:06

Yes, it’s a play which started in Chichester and transferred to the West End for a short but successful run.

symbioticpatriot · 06/04/2020 22:23

Yeah it was filmed about a year ago I think; I was following one of the actors at the time.
Good point about Chichester; so much amazing stuff starts there - must be a great festival for theatre lovers

SlipSlidin · 06/04/2020 22:51

Who are you telling to “calm down”.

Bit pissed off no one agreed with you op?

The prime minister might be dying, get some perspective yourself over your silly thread.

EustaciaPieface · 06/04/2020 23:05

There’s a good interview with Michael Sheen in today’s Guardian, he mentions that he remembers watching the episodes when they were first broadcast. But he discovered that they were never actually shown apart from in an ITV documentary. I thought the same, really thought I’d watched them!

JediJim · 06/04/2020 23:20

I used to be in the Army so will be interesting to see how they portray Ingram. Usually not that realistic, whenever they do army dramas.
Can’t remember how the guy in the audience, doing the coughing got the answers to the questions?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 06/04/2020 23:29

I’m looking forward to it. I remember at the time it was a massive deal, they didn’t show the program until after the trial. His wife just looked really angry in the audience the whole way through. It will be interesting to see the lead up and the aftermath. I just remember at the time everyone being amazed they thought they could get away with it.

(Cough) (no!)

JediJim · 06/04/2020 23:35

I remember Chris Tarrant saying how obvious it seemed, when he looks back on it!

PleasantVille · 06/04/2020 23:36

Cringey, the word is cringey!

People like you. I really don’t care if people agree or not. There will never be a tv show/film/play that everyone likes .. so why would I assume everyone would agree me?

It was a lighthearted conversation that people seemed to get offended over?

And thousands of people have lost their lives. Why is the prime minister more important than them? What an incredibly odd thing to say ...

I also just wanted one discussion away from CV ... I hear it all day long, I follow the rules, I do what I physically can ... but for mental health reasons I don’t think it’s selfish to want just a tiny break from what’s going on.

Not my thing didn’t watch the show anyway, certainly not going to waste time on this.

StampMc · 07/04/2020 09:11

I’m really looking forward to it. I think it would be a struggle, given the subject matter, not to play on the inherent comedy/cringe. It’s adults cheating in a quiz by coughing like a bunch of year 5s, they could hardly turn it into some sort of slick John le carre adaptation.

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 07/04/2020 09:14

@CorinnaSinner

Don't watch it then! Confused

sashh · 07/04/2020 10:40

I'm looking forward to it.

There is quite a lot of back story, Ingram was the third person in his family to take part.

Some of the people on the 'contestants row' spotted he was cheating.

If he'd just walked away with £60 000 he'd probably have got away with it.

JediJim · 07/04/2020 20:08

How was he eventuality caught, anyone remember? And how did the bloke in the audience know the answers?
Sorry being lazy not researching the case!

Comefromaway · 07/04/2020 20:10

Is it an adaptation of the stage show? That was supposed to be really good.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 07/04/2020 22:39

It’s written by the same chap who wrote the stage show but obviously changed for the different medium.

BarbarAnna · 07/04/2020 22:51

I think he kept being fixated on one answer and then suddenly switching and quickly saying final answer. We have watched a documentary on YouTube with our young kids and all found it fascinating so will definitely watch.

CorinnaSinner · 07/04/2020 23:11

Because it became incredibly obvious. He got carried away and should have stopped before the million.

He wasn’t in the audience at all. He was another contestant. He knew the answers just because he did.

SlipSlidin · 07/04/2020 23:38

Hmmmm maybe watch it op, might get some clarity eh?

PositiveVibez · 07/04/2020 23:43

I think it actually looks good. I have read lots of interviews with the actors and they aren't actually sure the 'originals' were guilty

Their dog was murdered. They had to take their children out of school because of bullying. They were spat on.

I think it's an extremely interesting story OP and I think YABU and a little bit of a smug twat.

babyinthacorner · 07/04/2020 23:47

I just read an article about it on bbc news app. It sounds really interesting - takes format of the play in that the first half portrays them as guilty and the the second half goes back and portrays them as innocent. I wouldn’t have taken any notice of it had I not read that article, but I want to watch it now. It sounds fascinating. And Michael Sheen and Sian Clifford are ace.
