Undeclared Tax Getting Come-Uppance

shomic · 06/04/2020 20:53

I've paid and declared tax through-out my 35yrs employment and am slightly miffed that SIL is now complaining that they are hard up because they have been paid cash in hand for the past 25yrs and now cannot get support from the government! Am I wrong to have no sympathy whatsoever.

She should have "put aside funds for rainy day" and not defrauded country claiming child benefit when drawing a cash income exceeding higher tax pay threshold and also expect bail out when things go pear-shaped.

Yanbu at all. You can't really add anything to your post op you've pretty much covered it.

GlamGiraffe · 06/04/2020 20:58

If you want to be part of the system be part of it, otherwise dont. In or out. You cant have it both ways. She made her choice.

CherryPavlova · 06/04/2020 21:01

I understand but think it’s tax avoidance loopholes that are the bigger issue.

AuditAngel · 06/04/2020 21:04

I was also the target of a very bitter acquaintance when I commented the bars and restaurants had been closed. My husbands two family businesses. He was more worried for staff than himself.

But she was quite unpleasant. You can’t have all the advantages of self employment and then kick off that you don’t get the benefits of employment.

And those that have defrauded the system will now reap the benefits of their tax evasion.

Pixxie7 · 06/04/2020 21:14

No sympathy serves her right.

refusetobeasheep · 06/04/2020 21:20

Nope, I would sit back and let her warble on and on ....... marvel at her total lack of self awareness

FudgeBrownie2019 · 06/04/2020 21:20

I don't have sympathy with those that cheat any system, but also don't think this is the time for point scoring or crowing about "comeuppances" because it just seems shitty.

Darbs76 · 06/04/2020 21:22

Yep and all the fathers who fiddled their income figures to avoid paying child support as well as avoid tax. Pay back. Karma.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 06/04/2020 21:24

I know a few people who have complained about this, near where I live.

I know one quite well. He went to work everyday, my presumption was that he was actually employed. Turns out it was cash in hand while him and his girlfriend claim benefits.

Not they are living on benefits alone and kicking off.

I do think these people deserve it.

But so many people who dont deserve it are struggling too. Its difficult to happy about it.

Doggybiccys · 06/04/2020 21:26

I know of 2 friends of friends who are taxi drivers - one declares a pitiful wage and pockets the rest , the other declares nothing so is “invisible” to the tax man (unless the taxi owner or someone shopped them). They are both basically fucked as there is so little business it’s not even enough to cover the weekly hire of the meter. I feel sorry for their DC who will no doubt sufffer but not them or their DPs who have been living the high life for years paying no tax.

tillytoodles1 · 06/04/2020 21:28

My ex son Iaw has his own business that's been closed due to the virus. He paid himself minimum wage but took over £50k in bonuses. Its now come back to bite him on the arse

MaxNormal · 06/04/2020 21:30

Not this again.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 06/04/2020 21:36

I know someone who has been self employed for a long time, higher rate tax payer (yes everything went through the books hence he was higher rate but only just) and suffered an injury which meant he had to close his business in January. In February spent several thousand retraining to start a new business that was less physical. He was booked up from the second week of March for 7 straight weeks already, but had to cancel due to the lock down. Because he wasn’t trading, he gets no help now just UC. He’s one of those that falls through the cracks. His savings which he could have used to live on, he spent on retraining so that he had a job and didn’t have to claim benefits whilst seeking suitable employment.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 06/04/2020 21:39

Sorry I didn’t answer your question- it is her own fault. It is sickening when you hear of people pocketing so much money so that they don’t have to contribute, when others who are honest fork out a lot. Why should someone enjoy the high life when someone else who earns maybe even more on paper, ends up with less in their pocket.

Samtsirch · 06/04/2020 21:43

Totally agree with @FudgeBrownie2019
Now is not the time.

midsomermurderess · 06/04/2020 21:46

I find your gloating over her current difficulties pretty disagreeable. Badly done, OP.

BMW6 · 06/04/2020 21:49

I would have to laugh in her face. It's not gloating. It's common justice.

bachsingingmum · 06/04/2020 22:03

No sympathy at all. This is tax evasion and costs the country a lot more now than tax avoidance which is withering in the face of mountains of anti-avoidance legislation. I hope people will learn from this.

QueenOfWinterfell · 06/04/2020 22:11

Not an ounce of sympathy here either.
