I know this is not the right place but traffic is useful!

Dh is being furloughed, he earns approx 51k so what will he be taking home and will he still pay tax and NI? Anyone earning similar that has been furloughed that can tell me a ballpark amount??Thank you.

Have a look on the Gov.uk website as they have updated the details on furloughing. Take home pay will depend on whether the employer is making up the 80% and what is included as contractual pay.

DragonMamma · 06/04/2020 19:24

The cap is £2500, which is subject to tax, NI and pension. It may be more than you think because of the new tax year.

Take home (with auto enrolment pension contributions of 5%) would be a shade over £1900pcm, I would say?

I've just furloughed most of our team at work. It depends if his company are topping it up. Essentially the government will pay 80% of salary up to a maximum of £2,500 per month (it works out at a 30k salary. You get taxed and NI on the 2.5k. His company can choose not to make any other payments or can choose to top up to his regular salary or a percentage of that. Our team are being paid as normal and we'll reclaim from the government but I'm hearing of companies who aren't paying employees until the claim comes in from the government

Yeah we haven't had any info from his workplace yet in regards to top ups etc so we'll have to wait and see. Thank you.

This app (free in Play Store) calculates your furlough pay. It's quite basic but I think it's right. I've been furloughed but only work part time so used it to calculate my anticipated pay.

I can't add a link! It's called "PAYE TAX calculator (now with furlough)"

furloughinfo · 06/04/2020 19:38

@livingthegoodlife thank you I'll get him to have a look.

It depends on what his work choose to do. My workplace has topped up the pay of those who earn over £30,000 (the £2500 a month cap) so they’re getting 80% of THEIR salary, but this isn’t a requirement. Other places are choosing to top up to 100%, or go only to the cap even if that’s a bigger drop than 80%. It will be what his work decides.

Yes the payment will still be subject to normal taxes/other contributions, but at that rate

BuffaloCauliflower · 06/04/2020 19:47

And yes, they need to give him all the terms in writing and he needs to agree to them, as it is a variation of his contract

furloughinfo · 06/04/2020 19:52

@HugoSpritz no not yet, I suppose he has one more pay to go... what do you mean consent? He hardly has a choice? What would happen if he objected?

If he objects to furlough he's effectively accepting redundancy.

Due to his job he can't keep working (safely) or wfh, and he doesn't want redundancy as of right now I suppose so furloughing it is. I suppose we'll have to wait and see what the terms and conditions are!?

Thank you everyone. The good news is his employer is giving him full pay and they will claim back the 2500. I think that's how it works.
