To think the PM should take proper time off and let someone else lead the country while he's ill

Doesn't make sense to me to try to run things from hospital. Surely he should take time off and leave it to Raab until he's better and fit to return

they are worried people will panic is they say Boris is too ill to work.

I guess that's possible. I think at the moment though it feels like, given that he's ill enough to be in hospital with it, he's likely doing his health no good if he is keeping going.
I've found trying to keep going when ill has led to far worse outcomes and you recover quicker by taking proper time off.

Thing is you would need to prise the PM job out of his cold dead hand. He has waited years to be PM and he won't let something like Coronavirus stop him.
I agree though he does need rest to recover from this properly, likely one of the reasons he is so unwell is not just because he is older and overweight but because he hasn't had time to just rest.

I would much rather he handed the reins over to Matt Hancock (or at push Rushi Sunak) for a few days at least. I dislike Dominic Raab and Michael Gove.

jenganinja · 06/04/2020 18:12

I think he definitely wouldn't hand over to Rishi Sunak as he's scared he'd be too good! at least with Raab everyone will be keen for the PM to get back Wink

it was quite annoying seeing some journalists trying to get Chris Whitty to break patient confidentiality they know he is not going to or he'll be the next to resign
whether you are the PM , the Queen or Joe Bloggs you are entitled to confidentiality and not have your medical condition and treatment scruntised by Joe public

CalmYoBadSelf · 06/04/2020 18:27

I don't think he can win. He is under scrutiny now for trying to carry on yet, if he chose to step back and rest, the journalists and left wingers, who are determined to find fault whatever, would be questioning his commitment and ability to return
We have to assume he is listening to advisors, both political and medical, and let the government get on with dealing with this

I disagree and am left wing myself. I reckon most decent people would realise why he needed time off. It's not as if he's elderly or someone with a health condition where he'd need loads of time off in future, it's a one off

I agree with you TeacupDrama they shouldn't have asked Chris Witty about his health like that.

Agree with PPs about the annoying repetitive journalists’ questions this evening!!

To think the PM should take proper time off and let someone else lead the country while he's ill

If he could take the next 30 years off that'd be great.

Rockbird · 06/04/2020 18:55

Yes he absolutely should be resting and recovering. It seems as if Raab has taken over in all but name though, if they haven't spoken since Saturday.

tegucigalpa13 · 06/04/2020 19:01

Never thought I would say this but the prospect of Dominic Raab in the driving seat makes me want Boris back.

Gove is of course the most talented of this motley crew. But his personality rules him out.

VapingHot · 06/04/2020 19:04

So the country is being run by Boris's ego. Terrifying!

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 06/04/2020 19:08

P1nkHeartLovesCake

I assume your post is a pisstake 😂😂.

If a paramedic with a confirmed diagnosis of Corona virus turned up to work and came to aid me or anyone I know who had fallen ill enough to need an ambulance I would be absolutely livid.

I know the NHS is stretched at the minute, but sending personnel diagnosed with a contagious deadly illness to tend to a sick patient would be an all time low.

startrek90 · 06/04/2020 19:28

YANBU. I dislike Boris Johnson intensely and I am a leftwinger but I think he needs to stop and rest. The man isn't in the best physical shape generally, is in his 50s and has an illness that has killed thousands. For his sake and his partner and unborn child's he needs to rest. Continuing to work will not be helping his recovery, my mum also has coronavirus but is not in hospital but she is still completely floored by it. If he is in hospital I would imagine he is worse.

And frankly I would much rather he paused for a couple of weeks and came back than continue on and die leaving the UK with no prime minister or deputy prime minister. I really don't think a leadership contest is what country needs in the middle of a pandemic.

whatdayisitandotherquestions · 06/04/2020 19:36

YANBU. He needs to be taking time off, if nothing else as a message to others they they shouldn't try to work through covid 19, particularly if they've been admitted to hospital FFS.

That he says he's still working adds fuel to the fire of ridiculous conspiracy theorists that it's not all that bad.

Also, how little does he think of the job of PM if he thinks he can give it his full attention while having difficulty breathing in hospital?

It's his ego, I'd imagine, that is stopping him from stepping back, he's probably scared of looking weak. Irony is, he'd be much more effective as PM if only he was able to lead by example and take the time off he needs to recover.

ilovesooty · 06/04/2020 19:38

Raab said this afternoon he had a secondary, bacterial chest infection and had recovered from the virus.Raab is doing anything for which a physical presence is necessary.

I couldn't care less whether Johnson works from his bed or not. I can't see it making much difference to the country.

jenganinja · 06/04/2020 19:44

When did he say that ilovesooty ?

OP posts:
jenganinja · 06/04/2020 19:44

Agree with pp that it also sends out the wrong message about how serious the virus is, or gives the impression people should keep on working with it.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 06/04/2020 19:47

Sorry it might not have been Raab. It was Iain Duncan-Smith I think. On the BBC this afternoon.

jenganinja · 06/04/2020 20:11

I'm surprised by this ilovesooty as the journos didn't seem aware of it at the press conference today
