To think's it ridiculous for reporters to stand outside buildings

Why do reporters think it's 'essential' to stand outside No 10 to report on government discussions? Or stand outside St Thomas's hospital to give us the latest (non) information on Boris's condition?

If they think we need visual aids in order to help us grasp what they are saying, why not put up a photo of the relevant building?

Am I missing something?

I agree! Same with tv presenters and til lately we had lara or laura from itv's gmb going in studio. We dont even need to see a weather person just voice over suffice.

They dont need to keep going to the studio or out. So daft.

eddiemairswife · 06/04/2020 16:15

And they report from Parliament Square in darkness when the House isn't sitting.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/04/2020 16:24

I've never understood it, and it's particularly daft if they're still doing it now.

MaryHerbert · 06/04/2020 16:31

I agree, I've always thought it was pointless. The person standing outside No.10 or wherever rarely knows anything more than the person in the studio, so it's nearly always a waste of time and resources, and surely they shouldn't still be sending reporters out and about in the present circumstances.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 06/04/2020 16:50

I agree completely. It’s always struck me as a bit daft but now it is an unnecessary journey. They clearly don’t want to WFH and have to broadcast with piles of washing and unruly toddlers. Grin

sonjadog · 06/04/2020 16:54

You would prefer the newsreporters to be live from their kitchen table?

Auridon4life · 06/04/2020 16:55

It's traditional. Completely stupid at the moment tho.

Leflic · 06/04/2020 17:00

Agreed it’s pointless and a huge waste of money. They get taxied r

Leflic · 06/04/2020 17:02

oh what happen there....taxied everywhere, dinner expenses the lot for being on location. Disgraceful waste of money.

millymae · 06/04/2020 17:02

I couldn’t agree with you more - ridiculous and especially so at the present time.
I’m sure the money that it must cost could be put to much better use.

LilacTree1 · 06/04/2020 17:02

Agree
And some will be on public transport.

Medievalist · 06/04/2020 17:05

Well at the moment of course. While we're all being told to stay indoors what on earth does standing outside No10 achieve other than potentially helping to spread the virus. Confused

OP posts:
fussychica · 06/04/2020 17:05

Completely pointless most off the time especially when it's lashing down with rain or blowing a gale and the item they are reporting on has nothing to do with weatherConfused

Chestnut23 · 06/04/2020 17:07

The worst is when they stand in the middle of ROME to tell us how quiet it is..

fussychica · 06/04/2020 17:09

Oh while we are on reporting why do we always have to have reports about old people or children with pictures of their legs. Just show the reporter if it's a a generic item, we know what children and the elderly look like and seeing legs does nothing to help us understand or connect with the story. Just ridiculous.

KaronAVyrus · 06/04/2020 17:13

Why do news readers feel the need to stand up to read us the news? Just sit down, at a desk, and get on with it.

Also, why do we need two newsreaders to read the news? One will suffice.

eddiemairswife · 06/04/2020 18:18

Often with old people it's hands as well as shuffling feet.

Chestnut23 · 06/04/2020 19:15

@fussychica YESS with the legs! Or exposed bellies on a bench when talking about obesity..!

Medievalist · 06/04/2020 22:10

And now Laura Kuennsberg is standing outside Westminster in the dark. There's nobody there. Why does she need to be there?

OP posts:
Redshoeblueshoe · 06/04/2020 22:17

Medie and Beth Rigby is outside no. 10 just why ?

RonnieBarkingMad · 06/04/2020 22:21

I find them funny because things can potentially go wrong especially when members of the public get involved.

Does anyone remember when Channel 4 news was reporting outside of parliament (I think) and there was a woman dancing in the background trying to get into shot and she had a giant box of M&Ms stuck to her head? I feel like I’m the only person to have seen that, nobody else seems to remember it, it was so bizarre.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 06/04/2020 22:23

Maybe it’s in case we forget that the Boris Johnson they are talking about is the PM not a greengrocer from Huddersfield.

lyralalala · 06/04/2020 22:23

I'm always baffled by this. Especially when they stand in the middle of a flood, or getting battered by a rain storm, to tell us how bad the weather is. Stand near a window and we'll still believe you

Icare1234 · 06/04/2020 22:26

Agree completely. In the old days it might have made sense when announcements genuinely were made outside number 10 or to waiting reporters outside a hospital. Now it’s a press release, tweet or other communication. During a pandemic just why are they out there?

teainthetardis · 06/04/2020 22:26

“oh what happen there....taxied everywhere, dinner expenses the lot for being on location. Disgraceful waste of money.“

Hahahahahahah. No. Really not.
